Material Handler / Purchaser

Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:45am-5:00pm (possible Saturdays 8am-12pm)
Pay: $18-$20/hr
MUST be able to pass drug screening!
Job Summary:
The Material Handler / Purchaser is responsible for the efficient handling, sorting, and inventory management of recyclable materials including tires, cardboard, metals, and other waste. This role also involves sourcing, negotiating, and purchasing recyclable materials from vendors and suppliers. The ideal candidate will ensure operational efficiency, compliance with environmental regulations, and maintain high standards of safety and cleanliness throughout the facility.
Key Responsibilities:
Material Handling:
- Receive, unload, and inspect incoming recyclable materials.
- Sort and organize materials including tires, cardboard, metals, plastics, and general waste.
- Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other equipment safely and effectively.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of storage and sorting areas.
- Prepare materials for shipment or further processing (e.g., baling, shredding, stacking).
- Perform regular inventory checks and maintain accurate records.
Purchasing / Procurement:
- Identify and maintain relationships with suppliers of recyclable materials.
- Negotiate pricing and delivery terms with vendors.
- Monitor market trends and pricing for recyclable commodities.
- Ensure timely and cost-effective purchasing of incoming recyclables.
- Track and document all purchases and inbound materials.
Compliance and Safety:
- Follow all safety protocols, including the use of PPE and safe equipment operation.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Participate in routine safety training and reporting.
Qualifications:
- 1–3 years of experience in material handling, recycling, or purchasing preferred.
- Knowledge of recyclable materials and commodity markets.
- Ability to operate forklifts and other material-handling equipment (certification preferred).
- Strong negotiation and communication skills.
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, inventory software).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varying environmental conditions.
Work Environment:
- Primarily warehouse and outdoor yard environment.
- Exposure to dust, noise, and various recyclable materials.
- Physical labor including lifting, bending, and standing for long periods.
