Job Summary
The Senior Electrical Testing & Commissioning Engineer is responsible for leading and managing all electrical testing and commissioning activities to ensure electrical systems are installed, tested, commissioned, and safely handed over in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and schedule requirements. This role provides technical leadership throughout the commissioning phase, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to support safe, reliable, and successful project delivery.
Job Description
- Lead and manage all electrical testing and commissioning activities.
- Develop commissioning plans, procedures, schedules, and test documentation.
- Coordinate commissioning activities with construction, mechanical, instrumentation, controls, and operations teams.
- Review electrical drawings, schematics, vendor documentation, and commissioning procedures.
- Supervise pre-commissioning and commissioning of:
- High-, medium-, and low-voltage electrical systems
- Power transformers
- Switchgear
- Protection and control systems
- Generator systems
- Auxiliary and emergency power systems
- UPS and battery systems
- Motor Control Centers (MCCs)
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
- Earthing, lightning protection, and cable testing
- Perform and witness electrical testing, including insulation resistance, transformer, relay protection, circuit breaker, CT/VT, Hi-Pot, and system integration testing.
- Lead system energization and handover activities.
- Troubleshoot electrical issues and coordinate corrective actions during commissioning.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, applicable electrical codes, and safety requirements.
- Coordinate equipment testing and start-up with vendors.
- Review commissioning documentation, manage punch lists, and prepare final turnover documentation.
- Support plant performance testing, reliability runs, and commercial operation readiness.
- Promote safe work practices, including Permit-to-Work and Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) compliance.
- Mentor junior commissioning engineers and technicians.
Skills Required
- Professional Engineer (PE), Chartered Engineer (CEng), or equivalent certification preferred.
- Electrical commissioning certifications are an advantage.
- Minimum 10–15 years of electrical engineering experience.
- At least 5 years in a senior testing and commissioning role on power generation or renewable energy projects.
- Experience commissioning geothermal, thermal, combined-cycle, hydroelectric, or large industrial power plants.
- Experience supporting EPC projects from construction through commercial operation.
- Proven experience leading multidisciplinary commissioning teams.
- Strong knowledge of:
- High-, medium-, and low-voltage electrical systems
- Power system protection and coordination
- SCADA, DCS, and plant control systems
- Generator synchronization and protection
- Electrical testing equipment and commissioning documentation
- IEC, IEEE, ANSI, NEC/NFPA, and ISO standards
- Strong troubleshooting, leadership, planning, communication, and technical documentation skills.
- Strong commitment to safety, quality, and meeting project milestones
Education/Training/Certifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Pay Rate/Salary
- Pay Rate $80- $100/ hr (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
