The Point of Care Testing (POCT) Laboratory at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a critical role in delivering rapid, accurate diagnostic results at or near the patient bedside. This team partners closely with nursing, physicians, and clinical staff across the institution to ensure timely decision-making and high-quality patient care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.

This Medical Laboratory Scientist role offers the opportunity to work in a highly visible, collaborative setting , supporting testing that directly impacts real-time clinical decisions. In addition to performing testing, this role functions as a key technical consultant and educator , supporting clinical staff across multiple departments.

In this role, you will perform routine and complex point of care testing , ensuring all quality control measures are met and taking corrective action when needed. You will troubleshoot and maintain laboratory equipment, support validation and implementation of new methodologies and devices, and ensure proper system connectivity and functionality. You will also analyze and evaluate patient results, including resolving exceptions, while maintaining accurate and complete documentation.

A unique aspect of this role is its strong focus on training and operational oversight . You will provide training and competency assessments for nurses, physicians, and other clinical staff performing point of care testing, ensuring compliance with CAP, CLIA, and Joint Commission standards. You will also monitor POC operations through database reviews and quality rounds, helping ensure consistent performance across all testing sites.

You will contribute to workflow efficiency and team support , prioritizing workload, assisting peers, and maintaining smooth laboratory operations. Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently while collaborating across teams are essential.

**The hours are 12pm - 8:30pm Monday - Friday with rotating weekend coverage. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in a science related field**

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Performs all laboratory testing specific to the assigned section.
- Remains knowledgeable and competent for all policies, procedures and protocols.
- Ensures and verifies quality control data is appropriate for the complexity of the reported tests and prepare corrective actions as required.
- Troubleshoots and maintains laboratory equipment.
- Validates and evaluates new methodologies and tests. sets up connectivity with the help of technical support.
- Follows section's inventory control system to assure effective use of supplies and reagents.
- Demonstrates ability to perform all duties of the technical consultant including but not limited to initial training and competency on new medical laboratory scientists and health care providers on POC Testing according to the guidelines in procedure, maintaining training records according to CAP, CLIA and The Joint Commission guidelines, maintain supplies and deliver POC reagents to the units, etc.
- Completes, verifies and reports testing in a timely manner
- Complies with safety guidelines and procedures and adheres to regulatory mandates.
- Remains responsible and accountable for all actions.
- Manages all customer service interactions with diplomacy, actively facilitating resolutions to problems and addressing the needs of clients both internal and external.
- Maintains proficiency on computer functions in the lab processes including but not limited to excel and different POC middleware.
- Analyzes and evaluates patient results correctly and appropriately to address Telcor Exceptions
- Stores patient information and results to allow easy future access as required.
- Perform OR Lab tests when needed.

Enhances productivity and laboratory lab functions by demonstrating dependability.
- Adjusts, prioritizes, and organizes work to achieve maximum productivity to meet the workload demands of the section.
- Monitor POC operations by daily review of the POC database and quality checks rounds to the units performing POC testing.
- Assists peers and supervisors with tasks after completion of assigned work.
- Adheres to attendance policy, begins work as scheduled.
- Works independently, utilizes resources available to maximize efficiency.

Assists in the development of laboratory personnel and tests, to enhance laboratory functions.
- Accurately trains and competency checks nurses, OR staff, physicians, respiratory techs and other staff requiring the need to perform Point of Care Testing.
- Participates in process improvement projects.
- Participate in new POC devices validation.
- Perform and monitor the Quality Checks required according to POC device including but not limited to IQCP requirements.
- Validates database for new software or new tests implemented in the laboratory.
- Coaches and mentors' students and employees

Other duties as assigned

Required:
• Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology OR
• Bachelor's Degree in a related science field or Molecular Genetic Technology OR
• Successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology accredited program

Required Experience:
• 2 years of clinical laboratory experience with an Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology
• 1 year of clinical laboratory experience with a Bachelor's Degree in a related science field
No experience required with completion of a NAACLS-accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology accredited program

Preferred:
• ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist Technologist/Scientist/Specialist certification OR
• CHS - Certified Histocompatibility Specialist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR
• CHT - Certified Histocompatibility Technologist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR
• MDT - Molecular Diagnostics Tech, American Medical
