Location: Startup Instrumentation Lead - 100% Onsite.
Duration: Long-term Contract.
Reports To: Commissioning Manager or I&C CSU Manager.
Work Schedule: Must be available for shift work including day, night, or split shifts as required.
Position Summary:
The Startup Instrumentation Lead is responsible for the supervision, planning, and execution of commissioning and startup (CSU) activities related to Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) systems. This position plays a critical role in the successful delivery of I&C systems—including DCS, ICSS, SIS, ESD, and FGS —ensuring they are installed, tested, and commissioned in alignment with project safety, quality, schedule, and cost objectives. This is a hands-on field leadership role that requires deep technical expertise and excellent coordination skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and interpret P&IDs to define and systemize the I&C commissioning scope.
- Lead development and review of I&C CSU deliverables such as:
- Cause & effect matrices.
- ESD/Trip testing procedures.
- Alarm summaries.
- Complex loop & logic testing procedures.
- Provide scheduling input for mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, and start-up sequencing.
- Review vendor documentation and engineering deliverables for commissioning readiness.
- Supervise CSU I&C engineers, supervisors, and technicians, providing day-to-day direction and oversight.
- Support the System Completions Database population and turnover package preparation.
- Coordinate I&C handover from construction to commissioning.
- Direct all I&C field testing and commissioning including:
- Instrument calibration & loop checks.
- ICSS & SIS testing.
- ESD & SIF validation.
- Fire & Gas system commissioning.
- Specialized vendor package interface testing.
- Support client demonstration testing and performance runs.
- Ensure full compliance with safety procedures and Zero Accident Philosophy.
- Monitor and requisition CSU spare parts and consumables.
- Support O&M documentation development, training, and handover.
- Serve as primary point of contact for vendor reps and subcontractors supporting I&C startup activities.
- Generate and maintain I&C CSU progress reporting and forecasts.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (preferably Electrical, I&C, or related field) with 10+ years of relevant experience OR 15+ years of relevant industry experience in lieu of a degree.
- Proven experience in startup and commissioning of major I&C systems including:
- DCS, SIS, ICSS, ESD, FGS.
- High-voltage motor control and VFD systems.
- Compressor control systems.
- Experience leading I&C commissioning teams on LNG, petrochemical, or oil & gas projects.
- Strong understanding of industry standards, codes, and control philosophies.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior field experience on U.S. Gulf Coast LNG projects.
- Familiarity with client systems and tools such as:
- Setroute, Unifier, Aconex, DSCS, PTR, Agile, Navisworks.
- Working knowledge of client Standard Work Process Procedures (SWPPs) and Commissioning & Test Procedures (STCPs).
- Experience in direct-hire, lump-sum EPC environments.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work in high heat and humidity environments on a construction site.
- Physical requirements include walking long distances , climbing ladders/scaffolding , and working on elevated platforms , uneven surfaces , or in confined spaces .
- Use of standard PPE including hard hats, harnesses, safety glasses, and life vests is mandatory.
- Must be fit for duty and capable of responding to dynamic worksite conditions.
