Crew Leader (Drainage)
Pay: $24.63 to $29.55 per hour
Under general supervision, leads an assigned work crew for the Public Works Department; performs skilled work in the operation of specialized vehicles and heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of City streets, bridges, roadways, drainage system and infrastructure.
Primary Duties:
- Operates specialized vehicles and heavy equipment used by the Public Works Department in the maintenance of City streets, roadways, drainage systems and infrastructure; duties may vary according to job assignment and individual skills.
- Leads work crews in repair and maintenance activities and special projects; prioritizes and assigns tasks; orders and stages materials, supplies and equipment; trains crew in work procedures and the proper use and maintenance of equipment.
- Coordinates the activities of assigned work crews; coordinates and assigns staff, vehicles, and equipment; reviews the work of assigned staff to ensure the work quality and timely accomplishment of assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Trains and evaluates staff; develops staff skills and conducts performance evaluations; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues.
- Maintains records and logs of work crew activities.
- Controls work sites to ensure that safety rules and regulations are adhered to, and that the work zones and all equipment are in safe operating condition.
- Operates a wide range of specialized vehicles and motorized equipment, including front-end loader, dump truck, bulldozer, spreader, grader, roller, scraper, backhoe, and tractor; performs work in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and roadway repair work; maintains vehicles, tools, and specialized equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; inspects, cleans, and performs routine maintenance work on vehicles and equipment; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair.
- Responds to emergency callouts resulting from severe weather, major accidents, or other factors; dispatches and accounts for crew activity during emergency events; performs tasks in the interest of public safety and property protection during emergencies.
- Assures that work assignments are completed according to specified work orders.
- Cross-trains work crews in proper work methods and safety procedures.
- Responds outside of normally scheduled work hours in response to special events, natural disasters, emergencies, or critical incidents as determined by the City.
- Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the City by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
- Cooperates with co-workers professionally to accomplish work efficiently and effectively.
- Has regular, predictable attendance; attendance is a factor in continued employment with the city.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Experience/Education/Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent;
- AND four years’ work experience in stormwater management or maintenance;
- OR an equivalent combination of related education, experience, or demonstrated abilities or proficiencies that result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Must possess a valid Class A or B Texas Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement; or be able to obtain within 6 months .
- Specific technical skills training and certifications may be required for some job assignments.
Required Knowledge of:
- Materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in repair and maintenance of streets, roadways, and infrastructure.
- Operation, maintenance and repair standards for heavy equipment and specialized vehicles.
- Federal, state and City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
- OSHA safety rules and regulations, and safety practices in hazardous traffic environments.
- Traffic laws and rules for vehicle and equipment operation.
- Proper use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.
- Customer service standards and protocols.
- Ability to learn and implement City Policies and procedures.
- Prioritizing tasks and assigning and coordinating work of assigned personnel.
- Reading and understanding construction blueprints, plans, specifications, and technical documents.
- Using specialized tools and heavy motorized equipment to perform maintenance and repair work.
- Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and motorized equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
- Making routine operating adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.
- Identifying mechanical problems.
- Following and enforcing safety standards.
- Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and the public.
- Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software.
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors at work sites throughout the city; required to perform moderate physical work and lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
