Job Location: Austin, TX 78752 (Hybrid – 1 day onsite per month)
Note: Candidates must be local to Texas or willing to commute 1 day per month. State experience is preferred.

Job Description:
The Texas Department of Public Safety (via DIR) is seeking a highly experienced Software Developer 3 with strong hands-on expertise in Visual Basic (VB), Java, and Microsoft SQL Server development. The ideal candidate will provide ongoing support, bug fixes, and enhancements to mission-critical agency applications. This includes data corrections, application troubleshooting, and documentation creation for existing and new software.
Specialty Areas:
• Visual Basic development – legacy application maintenance and enhancement
• Java development – integrating and supporting core applications
• SQL Server – writing, optimizing, and troubleshooting queries and stored procedures
• Application Support – handling incident tickets, resolving data issues, and ensuring operational continuity
• Software Documentation – creating user and technical documentation for all new/updated code
Responsibilities:
• Support and maintain existing applications using Visual Basic and Java
• Perform complex SQL Server query development and data troubleshooting
• Edit, correct, or develop new solutions to remedy application issues
• Create technical documentation for updated or newly developed code
• Collaborate with other developers and business units to resolve issues and improve functionality
• Participate in code reviews, unit testing, and QA processes
• Ensure adherence to the State of Texas security, documentation, and performance standards
• Provide prompt response to production issues or after-hours needs, if required

Mandatory Requirements:
• Minimum 8 years of professional experience in Visual Basic development
• Minimum 8 years of experience in Java programming and MS SQL Server
• Ability to troubleshoot legacy systems and handle production support
Qualifications:
• Prior experience working with the State of Texas or other government agencies
• Strong problem-solving, debugging, and analytical skills
• Familiarity with Agile or hybrid SDLC methodologies
