Controls and Automation Engineer III

JOB SUMMARY As an Automation Engineer III you will play a pivotal role in developing, implementing, and maintaining automated systems to streamline drilling processes and enhance efficiency of controls systems on Drilling Rigs. Leveraging your expertise in automation technologies and software engineering, you will contribute to the design, development, and deployment of automated solutions that drive productivity and innovation within our organization. The candidate will be responsible for project success as part of a project team, ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements are observed for all work completed, interpret client requirements, identify, and address design parameters and engineering problems, and ensure solutions are implemented accurately and within budget.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Design, develop, and implement automation solutions using Allen Bradley and Beckhoff PLC systems to optimize Drilling Rig machinery Controls and drilling automation processes.
- Collaborate with internal and external cross-functional teams to gather requirements, define project scope, and develop technical specifications for automation projects.
- Program, configure, and troubleshoot Allen Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix PLCs, as well as Beckhoff TwinCAT PLC systems, to control and monitor industrial processes.
- Develop HMI applications using software such as FactoryTalk View Studio and TwinCAT to provide intuitive interfaces for operators and engineers.
- Collaborate with vendors and external partners to evaluate, select, and integrate third-party hardware and software components compatible with Allen Bradley and Beckhoff PLC systems.
- Conduct comprehensive testing and validation of automation solutions to ensure they meet functional requirements, performance criteria, and industry standards.
- Provide technical support and training to end-users on the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Allen Bradley and Beckhoff PLC systems and associated equipment.
- Responsible of sustaining current rig applications and debugging / fixing issues that are reported in the field. This could be by answering calls and working with technicians, remotely connecting to rig system, or by traveling to the rig site and working with rig personnel to fix the issue.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 8 to 10 years' in an engineering environment, with a focus on designing, programming, and commissioning Allen Bradley and Beckhoff PLC systems in industrial environments.
- Proficiency in programming languages for PLCs, including ladder logic, structured text, and function block diagrams, with hands-on experience in programming Allen Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and Beckhoff TwinCAT PLCs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience with controlling automated machines using Beckhoff automation.
- Experience in the drilling industry
- Certifications in Allen Bradley and Beckhoff PLC technologies (e.g., Rockwell Automation certifications, Beckhoff training certificates) are highly desirable.
- Strong field troubleshooting skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- PLC : Beckhoff TwinCAT 3 (IEC 61131-3), RSlogix 5000
- HMI: TwinCAT HMI, FactoryTalk View Studio
- Proficient on machine controls which include induction motor control using AC Drives (SIEMENS/ABB/Converteam/Yaskawa), servo motor control, MCCs, hydraulic/pneumatics systems.
- Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP, Profibus, Profinet, Modbus TCP/IP, EtherCAT and OPC UA for seamless integration of PLC systems with other automation devices and software.
- Ability to read electrical schematics.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues related to Allen Bradley and Beckhoff PLC systems.
- Ability to extract and document requirements from user problem description
- While this position is primarily based in a professional office environment, travel to yards and rigs is essential and required.
- 25% travel is expected.
- The position supports drilling rigs that work 24/7 and will routinely require phone availability outside regular work hours
