Principal Commodities Risk Manager

About the position: We seek a Principal Commodities Risk Manager to join the WFM Commodities Team focusing on commodity price risk management. In this position, you'll own key programs and projects and be expected to develop and drive effective sourcing and procurement strategies to maximize commodity price risk avoidance and protect against price volatility. You are accountable for analyzing market trends and conditions affecting suppliers, cost of goods, raw materials, pricing, and the resulting impact on the business and the supply chain. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting formula-based benchmark cost models. As the Principal Commodities Risk Manager, you'll focus on delivering programs that balance top and bottom-line outcomes through the iteration of our customer value proposition and business structure. We are looking for a strategic thinker with exceptional writing skills who earns trust with stakeholders, dives deep into business metrics and processes, and consistently delivers results. Stakeholder management will be a critical success factor in this role. You must be able to build strong relationships and deliver results across our suppliers, WFM leadership, sourcing, and category teams in a manner that achieves our goals and effectively supports the stakeholders. This position is based in Austin, TX, and aligns with our remote/in-office work policies. - Relocation is offered for this position.
Responsibilities:
- Create and deliver schedule and ad-hoc forecasts and outlook reports in a manner that is geared to the audience.
- Create, implement, and manage forward contract strategies where applicable to reduce commodity price risk.
- Responsible for managing forward commodity positions against forecast and inventory needs.
- Lead and support supplier negotiations
- Provide strategic insights, education, and support to the WFM leadership, sourcing, and merchant teams.
- Help troubleshoot issues and processes and aggressively drive resolutions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong writing and presentation skills, with the ability to manage and interpret complex market factors into action steps geared to the audience.
- Strong negotiation and collaboration skills to establish and maintain internal and external strategic partnerships, resulting in long-term win-win-win relationships.
- Experience working with non-GMO and Organic commodity sourcing.
- Proficient in the use of Excel at an advanced level,
- Ability to function effectively with minimal supervision in a high-demand environment
- Adapting to change, being mindful of technology, business processes, and systems implications
- Willingness to travel up to 20%
Education and Experiences:
- Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent years of experience in related industry
- 5+ years of experience managing commodity price risk management; significant knowledge of exchange-traded commodities and experience in contracting for commodity needs within softs, edible oils and beans, grains (rice, wheat, flour, feed, etc.), dairy, and/or animal proteins.
