Substation Technician
Position Summary
The Substation Tech 2 plays a key role in maintaining, repairing, and supporting the operation of substations and transmission facilities. Working under limited supervision, this position performs technical field work, oversees contractors, troubleshoots advanced issues, and ensures that all construction and maintenance activities meet organizational specifications and safety standards.
Job Function
- Participate in scheduled substation and transmission maintenance activities, repairs, and recordkeeping.
- Assist in the installation and removal of portable substations.
- Support departmental leadership and promote team development.
- Oversee contractors and internal crews performing substation and transmission line construction.
- Inspect completed jobs to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Submit completed job sheets and verify the accuracy of documentation.
- Collect load and voltage data for engineering.
- Install and repair overcurrent relays, microprocessor-based controls, and RTUs.
- Perform substation switching operations for power restoration and maintenance.
- Repair and replace the substation and special equipment.
- Perform advanced line troubleshooting and resolve intermittent issues.
- Read electrical prints and construct wiring for substation relay panels.
- Use safe work practices at all times and handle confidential information appropriately.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in electrical utility line construction.
- Successful completion of technical training related to substations and special equipment.
Qualifications
- Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License.
- Certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens.
- Ability to perform pole-top rescue within required time.
- LCRA switching certification.
- Strong understanding of protective relays and basic electrical theory.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to interpret maps, construction reports, field notes, and material lists.
- Basic proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and IVUE Connect.
- Ability to maintain constructive, professional communication focused on problem-solving.
