Job Summary Caltech's Office of Communications and External Relations (OCER) is responsible for promoting understanding, inspiring support, and amplifying awareness of the Institute's research, people, accomplishments, and impact across print and digital platforms as well as through events. Our team members work closely with partners across campus to communicate the Institute's worldwide impact on science, engineering, and education, and to authentically represent its values and priorities. Within OCER, the digital communications team uses the web, social media, events, and multimedia channels to connect to and engage with diverse audiences around the priorities, initiatives, and key messaging themes for the Institute overall. The team works collaboratively with colleagues across OCER to effectively communicate about Caltech and why the Institute's impact across research fields and education matter; this may include the creation of standalone communications pieces as well as the development of assets to accompany other communications materials and events. Reporting to the Director of Digital Communications and working with the Senior Multimedia Producer, the Multimedia Producer will support the strategic development and deployment of professional-quality video that supports institutional messaging and informs, entertains, and engages Caltech's various constituencies. Responsibilities will include conceptualizing, scripting, recording, and editing video profiles, feature stories, news, and other related multimedia content as standalone pieces or as accompanying assets to written content or events. The Multimedia Producer will also play a key role in helping to implement an overarching video strategy for Institute communications and news, which may include coverage, documentation, and technical support of key events and initiatives. The Multimedia Producer will create professional-quality media for Caltech's Institute-level websites, newsletters, magazines, social media accounts, and other channels. The ideal candidate has a passion and talent for creating artistic visual content and a track record of translating nuanced topics into succinct, clear, engaging final products. The Multimedia Producer will be able to produce videos that reflects the character of the Caltech community or convey cutting-edge research. The Multimedia Producer must collaborate with individuals in divisions, departments, and labs across campus to tell stories that shed light on Caltech's impact, character, and excellence. Job Duties - Creation of video content and multimedia storytelling: conceptualization; storyboarding; scripting; pre-production; shooting; running interviews; and post-production work including editing and sound.
- Collaborate with team members across OCER to brainstorm concepts, develop material, plan, and schedule production of multimedia content that conveys Caltech's stories-from campus life to scientific research-in support of OCER's overarching communications strategy.
- Implement and innovate on current and future best practices and workflows associated with multimedia production, post-production, and distribution.
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in film, journalism, or communications discipline.
- 3 or more years of experience in video storytelling and multimedia content development.
- Demonstrated expertise with all aspects of video production, including composition, lighting, audio, and expert use of cameras and lenses.
- Fluency in nonlinear video editing (Adobe Premiere), color correction, and audio production.
- Proficiency and demonstrated experience creating videos that explain complex or nuanced subjects.
- Ability to take key marketing messages and conceptualize creative video.
- Expertise with multimedia file formats, codecs and compression workflows for video delivery.
- Experience managing, organizing, and archiving digital assets.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, mature judgment, and diplomacy to interact effectively all segments of the Caltech community.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
