Assistant Professor, Clinical Faculty Appointment (CFA) - Breast Surgical Oncology

General Duties:

Provides clinical expertise in patient care management for oncology patients referred for care in a MD Anderson facility practice setting. Also participates in administrative activities, clinical research, laboratory or translational research, education and quality and safety.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

I. Clinical

A. Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas Medical Board, and the American Board of Surgery, properly balanced with other academic activities.

1. Must be capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations. Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's subspecialty. This may require standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communications.

2. Develop and maintain a clinical practice for oncology patients referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center.

a) Provide physician staffing for the outpatient and the inpatient breast surgical oncology service at a level commensurate with that, which would be provided by other breast surgical oncologists with the same level of training and experience.

b) Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all surgical procedure charge documents within five working days.

c) Complete patient documentation for medical records within timeframes required by institutional policy. Will require dictating in a clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents.

d) Correspond as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.

e) Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty. This will require listening to and assimilating information from the conferences.

f) Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone conversations or in writing to other physicians.

4. Provide a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, advanced practice providers, students, and clinical staff.

5. Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the department.

5. Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships including other physicians, patients, and subordinates.

II. Administration

A. Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by the Department Chair. Listen to deliberations and provide verbal feedback as necessary.

B. Complete appropriate paperwork or documents in a timely manner as required by institutional or departmental policy.

C. Actively participate in departmental clinical program or meetings including retreats and department sponsored conferences.

D. Adheres to all institutional and medical staff policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

E. Support and actively participate in advancing departmental and institutional objectives across the MD Anderson Cancer Network.

F. Support and actively participate in advancing high reliability, quality, and safety within the department/institution.

III. Research

A. Actively engages in clinical or laboratory research and scholarly activities to enhance the academic environment of the department.

B. Seek appropriate intramural and extramural funding mechanisms to support research activities through the development of grant proposals.

C. Develop collaborative activities in the specific area of research interest.

D. Document research findings through the publication of results in peer reviewed journals and presentations at national meetings.

IV. Education/Teaching

A. Attend and participate in Division/Department/Breast Program/ teaching and continuing education conferences including but not limited to Grand Rounds, Morbidity & Mortality, multidisciplinary treatment, and surgical planning conferences.

B. Provide a teaching environment in the outpatient, inpatient, and operating room settings for fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers across the MD Anderson network.

V. Extramural

A. Represent the Department of Breast Surgical Oncology in local, regional, state, and national matters pertaining to the field of oncology. Will require traveling to sites outside of Houston and, upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by verbally or in writing sharing with section colleagues.
