Health Coordinator
Summary Job Summary:
The Health Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive health and dental services for children enrolled in the Early Head Start and Head Start programs. This role ensures full compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, state health regulations, and licensing requirements. The coordinator establishes partnerships with local health providers, oversees routine screenings and follow-ups, and maintains accurate health records and reports. They lead health and nutrition education efforts for children, families, and staff, support the development of individualized health plans, and collaborate with other program areas to ensure that children’s physical, mental, and developmental health needs are met. The Health Coordinator also supervises health staff, manages the health services budget, facilitates the Health Advisory Committee, and plays an active role in the Head Start management team. This position requires strong organizational skills, clinical knowledge, and a commitment to child and family well-being. Duties Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, implement, and evaluate health and dental services to ensure alignment with Head Start Performance Standards, program goals, and policies.
- Establish and maintain partnerships with community health agencies to provide comprehensive health services for enrolled children, including medical and dental exams, developmental screenings, follow-ups, and nutrition assessments.
- Oversee the administration and documentation of required screenings, including vision, speech, hearing, and general medical evaluations.
- Monitor the completion of health-related tasks and ensure timely data collection in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, Child Care Licensing regulations, and state health mandates.
- Provide leadership and support in mandated reporting procedures; guide staff in contacting the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services for suspected cases of child abuse or neglect.
- Collaborate with education and family services teams to identify children with special health needs and ensure timely referrals, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
- Supervise health and safety practices across all sites, including protocols for emergency medical care, hygiene, sanitation, and injury prevention.
- Manage and maintain accurate individual child health records; prepare and submit required health and nutrition reports (e.g., monthly reports, PIR) to program leadership.
- Develop and deliver health and nutrition education programming for children, staff, and parents to promote healthy behaviors and informed care.
- Coordinate with mental health and other content area coordinators to support holistic health services for children and families.
- Lead and facilitate the Health Advisory Committee, including planning meetings, setting agendas, and tracking action items.
- Manage inventory, ordering, and maintenance of all health and nutrition-related supplies and equipment.
- Ensure accuracy and timeliness in tracking medical, dental, and immunization records for all enrolled children.
- Document and track in-kind contributions provided by health and dental professionals in accordance with program requirements.
- Supervise, support, and coordinate the work of Health Services Specialists across sites and ensure consistent implementation of health protocols.
- Develop and manage the health services budget and content area plans in alignment with program objectives.
- Serve as a member of the Head Start management team, contributing to strategic planning and ongoing program development.
- Maintain strong working relationships with licensed health professionals to provide consultation or services as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the success of the Health Services content area and overall program goals.
- Hold active licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) with a minimum of five years of experience in community health or pediatric health services; or a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) with a Bachelor's degree in Public Health or a closely related field.
- Demonstrate strong computer proficiency, including the ability to navigate electronic health records, document services accurately, and use virtual communication tools.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with children, parents, and staff to support coordinated care and positive health outcomes.
- Collaborate effectively with personnel across departments, maintaining respectful and solution-focused interactions.
- Provide guidance and support to families and caregivers to help them understand health needs, available services, and preventive care practices.
- Maintain access to reliable, insured transportation to travel to assigned locations and complete work responsibilities.
- Must meet all health and safety requirements, including:
- Passing a pre-employment and/or periodic physical exam
- Annual TB screening
- Background check and renewals as required
