JOB SUMMARY
To perform routine maintenance and repair work on City buildings, facilities, and equipment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the immediate supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES : - Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform a variety of routine building repair and maintenance tasks involving City facilities and electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems.
• Assist higher level building maintenance staff in a variety of highly skilled building maintenance and repair tasks for City facilities.
• Make routine repairs on electrical lighting systems, doors, windows, floors, appliances, and furniture.
• Move and arrange furniture and equipment; set up rooms for special City events; set up lighting and public announcement systems as instructed; store furniture as requested.
• Perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties; mow lawns using power mowers; trim trees and bushes; pick up debris; maintain and repair grounds equipment.
• Sweep, vacuum, mop, wax, strip, and polish floors including carpets.
• Dust and polish furniture, woodwork, fixtures, and equipment.
• Clean and wash various surfaces including windows, walls, desks, and countertops.
• Empty and clean waste containers.
• Clean and maintain supplies in restrooms.
• Regulate ventilation and temperature; clean or replace filters, as necessary.
• Lock and unlock doors, open and close City buildings.
• Pick up papers and other debris contained in or on internal and external facilities and property.
• Paint exterior and interior of City buildings including offices, meeting rooms and restrooms.
• Maintain custodial and building maintenance supplies and equipment.

Other Important Responsibilities and Duties:

• May control stage lights and sound systems as requested; assist with operation of spotlights.
• May raise and remove Federal, State, and local flags daily from City flag poles.
• Remove gum from furniture, as necessary.
• May clean and maintain roof.
• Verify fire extinguishers on premises as being effective and compliant with codes and ordinances.
• May repair awnings and overhangs on buildings.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:

• Standard practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in building cleaning and maintenance.
• Safe work practices.
• Basic staging lighting and sound equipment and operation.
• Effective scenery and stage sets.
• Operation and application of a variety of building and grounds maintenance tools and equipment.

Ability to:

• Perform routine building and grounds maintenance and repair.
• Use and care for tools, supplies, and materials required in the work.
• Operate stage lighting and sound systems.

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

• making observations
• reading and writing
• operating assigned equipment
• communicating with others

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
walking, kneeling, stooping, standing, or sitting for extended period of time.

• lifting and moving heavy equipment and materials
• climbing stairs or ladders
• heavy manual labor
• operating assigned equipment

Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to:
hazardous chemicals and materials

• various weather conditions
• electrical hazards
• confined or high workplace

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be.

Experience:
One year of responsible experience performing custodial work.
Training:
Completion of formal or informal education which provides the ability to read and write at a level required by the job.
