Patient Care Technician - Clinical Decision Unit (CDU)

Evening/Night Shift. 7:00pm - 7:00am. Three shifts per week with rotating weekends and holidays.

The Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) provides observation services to patients that do not meet the admission criteria. Short-term treatments, assessments, and reassessments are provided while a decision is being made for final disposition. The CDU is a 16-bed unit with 24/7 provider coverage, managing a number of medical problems that do not require hospitalization.

• A designated, 16-bed medical unit where adult patients in need of additional monitoring, diagnostic evaluation and/or treatment may be placed while a clinical decision is being made to admit the patient for hospitalization or discharge the patient for further care.
• Available for patient care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays
• Clinically managed by Physician Assistants and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses from two existing clinical programs within the Division of Acute Care Services: the Acute Care Proceduralist Progam (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) and the Nocturnal Program (6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.).
• An effective clinical operations strategy for managing medical observation patients at MD Anderson.
• Placement of the patient in the CDU will be based on the patient's medical need and will follow criteria for placement, evaluation, treatment and disposition.

SUMMARY

Function: Provides patient care services as assigned by a registered nurse.

Scope: Impacts patient comfort and outcome of care.

Essential Job Functions:

· Acts as member of a multidisciplinary team that identifies and addresses patient care needs.

· Assists in completion of activities of daily living, mobilization, admit/discharge and obtaining vital signs.

· Updates and retrieves patient information.

· Ensures patient environment is maintained in a clean, safe and orderly manner.

· Acts as part of an assigned care team.

· Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

Received: Directly from a registered nurse.

REQUIREMENTS

Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Education Preferred: None.

Experience Required: None

Experience Preferred: Current or recent patient care experience in a hospital setting.

Licensure/Certification Required: None.

Licensure/Certification Preferred: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

Other Required: Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.

Experience Preferred: One year of patient care experience (current or recent) in a hospital setting.

License/Certification Preferred: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
