Primary Purpose:
Assist the Transportation Assistant Director in managing the department operations and a specific transportation facility to ensure safe and efficient transportation for students to take full advantage of the curricular and extracurricular activities provided by the district.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Major Responsibilities and Duties Routing/Bus Operations 1. Design and manage bus routes using demographic data, transportation software, and other resources. Monitor ridership and develop new routes as needed. 2. Assist in coordinating transportation for extracurricular trips, special programs and events. 3. Assist as needed with the operation of the dispatch office. 4. Substitute on a bus as required. 5. Oversee and conduct accident investigations as required. Organizational/Community Climate 6. Facilitate effective communication with district/campus personnel, parents, and the community, to resolve transportation issues, ensure a safe and positive environment, and promote employee success. 7. Promote high expectations, recognize excellence and achievement, and encourage good attendance and safe driving. 8. Collaborate with school staff to promote teamwork and school bus safety education. Personnel Management 9. Maintain driver records. 10. Assist with recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating staff and give input on assignments, retention, discipline, and dismissal. Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management 11. Ensure compliance with district policies, state, and federal school transportation laws/regulations. 12. Resolve operational problems effectively and promptly. 13. Maintain records essential for transportation excellence. Student Management 14. Support the Assistant Director and discipline officers in implementing the district's student discipline policies and ensuring behavioral expectations pertaining to district transportation are communicated, and promptly investigated and resolved. Policy, Reports, Laws 15. Review and implement safety standards and procedures. 16. Enforce safety standards in compliance with state, federal, and insurance regulations. 17. Assist in the implementation of a preventative safety program. Professional Growth and Development 18. Participate in professional development activities/programs to stay informed on student transportation needs and trends. Other - Regular Attendance at work is essential.
- Available 24/7 and willing to work irregular hours as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum Experience: - Two years of experience driving a school bus preferred
- Two years of supervisory experience preferred
- Two years of routing experience preferred
- Transportation routing software experience preferred
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Education/Certification: - Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; OR High School Diploma/GED with a minimum of three years of work-related experience, preferably in student transportation
- Valid Texas Driver's License (Class B CDL) with both (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus Endorsements
- Must successfully pass an annual school bus driver physical examination by a licensed physician
- Eligible for coverage under the district's vehicle insurance program
Special Knowledge/Skills: - Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, and Transportation related software, including state reporting
- Ability to make responsible decisions in emergencies
- Strong organizational, problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of and ability to prepare state and federal reports
- Knowledge and implementation of state and federal rules, regulations and safety procedures concerning school bus operations
- Ability to assist with the supervision and management of a large vehicle fleet operations
OTHER INFORMATION: Equipment Used Standard office equipment, computers and any technology associated with the job. School bus, and safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher Working Conditions Mental/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds), reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, walking, operation of a motor vehicle, specific visual requirements (computer, driving), specific hearing requirement (driving, telephone and oral conversations).
Exposure to outdoor and indoor environments with excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness and/or chilling; excessive noise (intermittent), dust; fumes, smoke, or gases; solvents (degreasing agents), grease and oils, unusual fatigue factors (long hours sitting at computer).
