Accounts Payable Manager

The Position

This growing team is seeking to add an Accounts Payable ( AP) Manager to oversee and lead the AP team. This role is responsible for managing all aspects of the accounts payable process to ensure accurate and timely processing of invoices, payments, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator with a deep understanding of AP operations, internal controls, and best practices. This role will report to VP of Accounting and Controller and will be located in Houston, TX.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the accounts payable department.
  • Lead and mentor a team of Staff Accountants, providing training and performance feedback.
  • Prepare and analyze AP reports, metrics, cash forecast, and other relevant reports for management review.
  • Oversee the processing of invoices and routing workflows, expense reports, and vendor payments.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Develop and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Monitor aging reports and resolve outstanding AP issues or discrepancies.
  • Manage vendor relationships, including onboarding, inquiries, and dispute resolution.
  • Collaborate with various departments to support cross-functional goals.
  • Ensure timely month-end and year-end close processes related to AP.
  • Prepare and analyze AP reports and metrics for management review.
  • Support audits by providing documentation and responding to auditor inquiries.

  • Key decisions are made based on project spend by various departments. As such, it is important to make sure that spend is being recorded correctly.
  • Streamline and structure the accounts payable function in terms of policy, process and procedures, and timing.

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field or equivalent years of experience. [LM1] [LM2] [DN3] [LM4]
  • 5+ years of experience in accounts payable, with at least two years of management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of account principles and best practices.
  • Proficient in ERP Systems.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to multi-task efficiently with constant regard for accuracy and quality.
  • Articulate speaker with the ability to lead public presentations.
  • Strong writing skills, including both technical and persuasive writing.
  • Ability to read and digest large amounts of information rapidly.
  • Deep curiosity for all functional areas of development including commercialization, engineering, land acquisition, public outreach, and US state and federal regulations.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to manage deadline pressure, ambiguity and uncertainty, and project changes.
  • Strong computer and data management skills, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small, nonhierarchical organization.
  • Familiarity and basic proficiency with professional GIS systems and maps.
  • Proactive and open to embracing new challenges.
