Summary

This position is assigned to the Food & Beverage Division; Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department; Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) aboard Naval Air Station Kingsville. The purpose of this position is to support the Duty Manager and/or Assistant Hospitality Director of the facility. In addition to regularly occurring bartending duties, this position leads a minimum of three (3) bartenders and/or bar attendants. The minimum age for employment in this position is 21.

Duties

  • Leads all bar staff on duty and coordinates bar coverage to ensure that service runs smoothly, and customer service standards are adhered to. In addition, may provide instruction and guidance to food service workers that are servicing the bar area.
  • Responsible for training and leading new staff working in the bar area.
  • Responsible for ensuring that bar supplies/dry goods/fruits/mixers/purees are ordered, and work area stays stocked.
  • Assists in maintaining carbonation and beer systems.
  • Prepares and serves all types of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages from a full-service bar. Mixes a wide variety of drinks to order without following a recipe including complex, rare, or specialty items. Also responsible for inventing specialty drinks, making drink/menu suggestions for special events, and staying abreast of popular drink trends.
  • Answer questions about facilities and menus and makes suggestions on food and beverage selections.
  • From arrival to departure, ensure guests are attended to promptly and addresses any customer service issues that arise in/around the bar area.
  • Sets up and breaks down the bar area or oversee those carrying out the assigned tasks. Also responsible for directing the cleaning of the directly adjacent seating area and equipment.
  • Handles cash and responsible for own change fund. Also responsible for handling credit card information in a confidential manner.
  • Responsible for training and leading new staff working in the bar area.
  • Assists in taking inventory and maintaining records.
  • Washes bar equipment, glassware, and utensils. May perform other sanitation duties within assigned work area as required or direct others in sanitation duties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Employee is responsible for the efficient operation of the bar and its personnel. Employee is responsible for complying with standard methods and procedures such as conduct, etiquette, dress code, serving techniques, and complete familiarity with the menu. Employee independently plans and carries out tasks and assignments in accordance with standards, instructions, policies, and accepted practices. Completes duties and tasks with occasional spot checks from supervisor during progress or upon completion. Supervisor is kept apprised of work status and unusual situations or problems, which may have impact on services offered. Uses independent judgment in deciding that the standards of sanitation, attractiveness, timeliness, safety, and service are met.

Two years of specialized experience directly related to the duties described above. Qualifying experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Skill to perform duties with several steps and use independent judgment in the performance of non-sequential tasks. Concentration is required to manage competing tasks, manage multiple orders/tables, and to process the constant flow of information and requests with competing and/or changing priorities. In depth understanding of common sanitation procedures and food handling to prevent contamination. Basic knowledge of food preparation and a comprehensive knowledge of all menus used in the facility.
  • Knowledge gained through pertinent job experience enabling the incumbent to be highly skilled at serving beverages including specialty drinks, assist with food service set-up/breakdown, and demonstrate outstanding customer service skills. Must possess two years of work-related experience in bar operation with a minimum of one-year documented leader or supervisory experience as a full-service bartender, measuring, mixing and serving a wide variety of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages in a full range bar.
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to lead and train bartenders and bar attendants in proper drink making techniques, customer service, and food handling procedures.
  • Ability to build and sustain a positive rapport with customers, co-workers, and management. Must be able to give and receive feedback regarding performance with tact and professionalism.
  • Ability and willingness to follow directions and carry out tasks with little to no supervision.
  • Demonstrate good decision making skills when presented with customer service issues, including and managing conflicting tasks or information.
  • Must be able to understand, apply, and enforce existing regulations regarding patron use of the activity and/or facility.
  • Must have the ability to deal effectively with various members of the public, including de-escalating negative or highly charged interactions with upset, stressed, and/or intoxicated customers.
  • Must be able to react spontaneously and to make sound decisions often in loud, constricted and heavily trafficked areas with continuous disruptions and distractions.
  • Ability to take orders and answer questions from customers, over the phone and in person.
  • Ability to handle cash, perform arithmetic and confidentially process credit card information.
  • Ability to read and write standard American English is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing using standard American English is required.

Physical Effort: Must walk or stand for prolonged periods of time. Frequent light to moderate lifting and carrying objects weighing 5 to 15 pounds, pushing and pulling objects weighing 10 to 20 pounds and occasionally lifting up to and over 40 pounds. Uses dolly to transport beer kegs. Working Conditions: Works inside with adequate lighting, heat, and ventilation. Subject to cuts, bruises, and chapped hands
