Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (or Physician Assistant) - General Internal Medicine

• Advanced Practice Providers in the Department of General Internal Medicine are responsible for assessing and conducting comprehensive patient histories, physical examinations, and psychosocial assessments. This involves direct communication with patients and patients' families and the ability to clearly communicate findings to physicians and family members.
• Has primary responsibility for working with department faculty physicians to assist in covering General Internal Medicine services. Clinical aspects include, but are not limited to, management of chronic medical illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension (HTN), and COPD; assessment and management of common acute and episodic illnesses such as constipation, cough, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, suspected or new DVT, asymptomatic PE, and URI symptoms. This role also includes assessment and management of adverse events or side effects in patients receiving chemotherapy in the ATC, as well as management of the acutely ill hospitalized surgical patient.
• Performs and records histories, physical assessments, and progress notes within 24 hours. For co-managed patients, completes sign-off and forwards documentation to the supervising physician for co-signature within 24 hours.
• Orders routine tests appropriate to the services provided under such orders.
• Orders patient medications and treatments within authorized limited prescriptive authority, consistent with institutional delegated prescriptive authority policies and procedures.
• Assists with clinic- and hospital-related paperwork, including radiology and nuclear medicine forms, placing patients on clinical pathways, and writing or calling in prescriptions.
• Retrieves and reviews laboratory results, pathology reports, radiology findings, and other diagnostic reports.
• Facilitates communication with the supervising physician and consultants to determine appropriate disposition of patients seen in Consultative Medicine by reviewing laboratory and/or diagnostic results and coordinating care with multiple specialties.
• Independently initiates monthly assignments without supervision. Understands and responds appropriately to telephone communications with physicians and other members of the health care team, both within and outside of the institution. Communicates clearly in writing, verbally, person-to-person, and over the phone.
• Attends Monthly Consultative Medicine Meetings.
• Attends Division of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds. 2. Education / Research / Collaboration
Provide patient and trainee education, participate in clinical protocol-related tasks as needed, and commit to collaborative relationships with coworkers, patients, faculty, physicians, and all members of the health care team.
• Delivers education to patients and their families. Conducts in-service training for clinic and inpatient nursing personnel regarding protocol requirements. Acts as a liaison among patients, families, physicians, and other personnel.
• Participates in trainee education, including student Advanced Practice Nurses, house officers, and medical students. Instructs coworkers in allied positions on documentation and/or data entry and may supervise personnel in related activities.
• Participates in and collaborates on clinical research protocols. Interviews patients and reviews eligibility criteria to identify potential candidates for protocol studies.

- Required: Master's Degree Nursing. or
