Laboratory Technician - Molecular Diagnostic - Days

The Department of Molecular Diagnostics at MD Anderson Cancer Center supports advanced genomic and molecular testing that directly informs precision oncology care. Operating in a highly specialized, regulated laboratory environment, the department relies on accurate specimen handling, organized workflow management, and strict adherence to quality standards to ensure reliable and timely patient results.

As a Laboratory Technician, you will perform assigned laboratory tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures, ensuring proper receipt, accessioning, processing, and identification of patient specimens. You will evaluate specimen integrity, identify unacceptable specimens in alignment with departmental guidelines, and notify appropriate personnel to maintain testing accuracy and compliance.

In this role, you will maintain proficiency in laboratory computer systems, accurately document quality control and quality assurance activities, and ensure complete, organized, and precise recordkeeping. Attention to detail is critical, as your work directly supports downstream molecular testing and reporting.

You will prioritize and organize workflow to meet productivity goals, remain knowledgeable of pre-analytical processes, and assist with troubleshooting to help ensure optimal turnaround times. Effective inventory monitoring and responsible use of laboratory supplies are also essential components of maintaining efficient operations.

Professionalism and customer service are integral to this position. You will communicate courteously and effectively with internal and external stakeholders, report resolutions according to established policies, and demonstrate cooperation and composure in dynamic or high-volume environments. Your ability to remain calm during challenging situations and assist as needed contributes to a positive and collaborative laboratory culture.

Additionally, you may assist with training new personnel and students, sharing knowledge of laboratory techniques and processes to support team development and continuity of operations.

**The hours for this position are 9am - 5:30pm. The ideal candidate will have a bachelors degree in a science related field.**

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

•Performs laboratory procedures leading to diagnosis or assimilation of data with minimal supervision.

•Prepares and maintains laboratory areas, ensuring cleanliness and proper aseptic techniques.

•Prepare records, labels specimens for filing.

•Serves as curator of the files including the retrieval system.

•Performs technical duties related to photography of specimens and distribution of materials for interpretation.

•May serve as an assistant to the investigator during dissections or animal surgery.

•Performs other duties as assigned

Education

Required:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent

Preferred:
• Associate's Degree
• Bachelor's Degree

Work Experience

Required:
• 1 year in a clinical medical laboratory or similar setting OR
• No experience required with preferred degree
