Our client is seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting operations, strengthen financial controls, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide strategic financial leadership. The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional with strong technical expertise, proven supervisory experience, and the ability to manage complex financial operations while supporting organizational goals.
This role will oversee accounting functions, financial reporting, cash management, internal controls, audits, budgeting, and staff development while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and industry regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Direct and manage cash disbursements to vendors, employees, customers, and other stakeholders, ensuring accurate classification and recording of expenditures.
- Oversee the chart of accounts, including the creation, maintenance, and management of account codes and classifications.
- Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of annual financial statements, regulatory reports, tax-related filings, and supporting schedules.
- Prepare audit workpapers and supporting documentation for independent auditors.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to analyze financial records and ensure accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial data.
- Manage fixed asset accounting, including capitalization and depreciation in accordance with GAAP.
- Develop, monitor, and oversee departmental budgets and resource allocation.
- Assist in the evaluation, implementation, and enhancement of financial systems and technology solutions.
Compliance & Internal Controls
- Serve as Co-Investment Officer and ensure compliance with the Public Funds Investment Act and applicable investment policies.
- Ensure compliance with federal cash management regulations and other applicable financial and accounting requirements.
- Design, implement, and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard assets, ensure operational efficiency, and support accurate financial reporting.
- Monitor compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and accounting standards.
- Stay current on accounting, tax, and regulatory developments through ongoing professional development.
- Support organizational reporting requirements and ensure timely submission of required financial information.
Leadership & Operations
- Manage and develop accounting and finance staff, providing leadership, coaching, and performance management.
- Assign and delegate projects and responsibilities while monitoring workflow and productivity.
- Establish departmental goals, priorities, and deadlines aligned with organizational objectives.
- Recruit, onboard, train, and mentor team members.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide regular feedback and development opportunities.
- Implement and enforce policies, procedures, and quality standards.
- Monitor departmental expenditures and budget performance, implementing corrective actions when needed.
- Foster a culture of accountability, operational excellence, and customer service.
- Perform other duties as assigned by executive leadership.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Accomplish department objectives through effective leadership, organization, and oversight of work processes.
- Recruit, select, train, and develop employees.
- Coach, counsel, and discipline staff as necessary.
- Plan, monitor, and evaluate employee performance.
- Establish and enforce systems, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
- Develop schedules, assign work, and manage resources to achieve operational objectives.
- Monitor productivity standards and implement process improvements.
- Control departmental expenses and monitor budget variances.
- Ensure quality standards and customer service expectations are met.
- Set performance goals and deadlines that align with organizational strategy and vision.
- Organize workflow and ensure employees understand responsibilities and expectations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive accounting and financial control experience.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience leading accounting or finance teams.
- Strong knowledge of:
- GAAP
- Financial reporting and analysis
- Internal controls and risk management
- Audit preparation and compliance
- Cash management and treasury functions
- Budgeting and forecasting
- Fixed asset accounting
- Federal regulations and compliance requirements
- Public funds and investment regulations
- Proficiency with ERP systems, accounting software, and advanced Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a highly regulated environment.
- Experience overseeing regulatory reporting and audit processes.
- Proven track record of improving financial processes, controls, and system efficiencies.
- Knowledge of federal funding, grants management, or compliance reporting requirements.
