NICU Nurse Manager - Level III NICU
A full-time Nurse Manager opportunity is available within a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at a 360+ bed multi-specialty hospital in Austin, Texas. The unit manages an average daily census of approximately 75 patients across 97 beds and is supported by a multidisciplinary team of around 150 full-time equivalent staff members. This facility provides advanced maternal-fetal and neonatal services within a high-acuity, fast-paced academic and clinical environment.
The NICU Nurse Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, daily operations, staffing, and clinical performance of the neonatal intensive care unit. This role focuses on ensuring safe, evidence-based care delivery while driving consistency in clinical practice and optimizing patient outcomes. The manager oversees staffing assignments based on patient acuity and staff competency, fosters strong interdisciplinary collaboration across departments, and supports efficient patient flow and transitions of care. A key part of the role includes developing clinical staff, identifying performance and growth opportunities, and promoting a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities:
Oversee daily operations, staffing, and clinical quality within a Level III NICU.
Lead and manage a team of approximately 150 FTEs.
Ensure safe, evidence-based neonatal care delivery aligned with best practices.
Coordinate staffing assignments based on patient acuity and clinical needs.
Promote interdisciplinary collaboration and efficient patient throughput.
Monitor and improve clinical outcomes and patient safety metrics.
Support staff development, coaching, and performance management.
Foster a culture of accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.
Partner with hospital leadership to support strategic unit goals.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
Minimum of 3–5+ years of healthcare experience required.
At least 2+ years of supervisory or leadership experience in an acute care setting required.
Current Registered Nurse license in Texas or active compact RN license (Texas licensure required within established timeframe for out-of-state compact holders).
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Specialty certification required within 6 months of hire.
NICU leadership or Charge Nurse experience strongly preferred.
Additional certifications such as ACLS, NRP, FHM, or RNC-OB preferred.
Strong leadership, communication, and operational management skills.
Schedule:
Full-time
Evening shift (approximately 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM)
Five days per week, with potential flexibility for four 10-hour shifts
