X-Ray Technologist Job description

JOB SUMMARY

This position is primarily responsible for performing a variety of radiologic procedures of specific body areas by using ionizing radiation generated by radiation-producing equipment. This position is also responsible for obtaining and providing diagnostic images for the diagnostic assessment of medical problems on a patient population, including pediatric, young adult, adult, and elderly patients, by performing the following duties.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinates all pertinent activities pertaining to radiologic and radiation safety procedures while under limited supervision.
  • Plans and operates, executes, and documents all diagnostic radiology activity.
  • Offers technical communication, organization skills, and problem-solving support to staff technologists and staff physicians.
  • Prepares the patient for the requested radiologic procedure by explaining the procedure, removing jewelry through which x-rays cannot pass, and positioning the patient so that the part of the body of interest can be appropriately radiographed.
  • Prevents unnecessary radiation exposure to patients, other employees, and to self
  • Practices and uses the ALARA principles of radiation protection which include time, distance, and shielding when radiation is generated.
  • Maintains certification, licensure, and continuing education requirements set forth by governing professional agencies.
  • Assumes responsibility for the operation of their assigned area, including processing requisitions, staff interactions, patient flow, and assuring accurate procedure documentation and charges.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
  • Establishes and maintains a par level of necessary supplies.

Other functions and Responsibilities

  • Must be proficient in the operation of any or all of the following typical radiologic equipment, including radiology/fluoroscopy machines, portable C-Arms,
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of sound radiographic principles (e.g., radiation protection and exposure techniques), basic knowledge of all film processors, and standard aseptic techniques.
  • Must be able to work independently and without direct supervision.
  • Possess working knowledge of computers and DICOM imaging systems.
  • Must have a strong sense of touch to find veins not visible and start IVs.
  • Must be able to recognize signs of distress and allergic reactions in patients who have non-ionic IV contrast administered.
  • Must be familiar with medications and equipment used during allergic reactions.
  • Must be IV certified and use the appropriate IV equipment safely while using Universal Precautions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of:
  • Database Software (Access); Internet Software; Spreadsheet Software (Excel); Inventory Software; Order Processing Systems; (Word); Electronic Mail Software (Outlook)
  • Minimum of two years in a clinical or hospital environment.
  • Specialty experience/certifications preferred.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a two-year AMA accredited school of radiologic technology.
  • Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and Licensure by the Texas Department of Health, MRT program.
  • CPR-BLS certified.
