Description/Notes:Primary Purpose:
Assist in implementing the students’ Individual Educational Plan (IEP), participate in selecting, planning, organizing, and evaluating materials, and releases the teacher from routine tasks. Qualifications: Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED Valid SBEC Educational Aide certificate CPI (Crisis Prevention/Intervention) Certification Special Knowledge/Skills: CPR, some familiarity with students who have “special” needs Comfortable with seizure maintenance Experience: Some experience working with children. Major Responsibilities and Duties: Instruction 1. Instruct students and groups of students under the teacher’s direction.2. Provides assistance to teacher in preparation, usage, and storage of instructional materials, including bulletin boards, displays, centers, and media equipment.
3. Assist students with learning activities.
4. Accompanies and assists students in mainstream settings working under the direction of the classroom teacher, including the cafeteria, library, field trips, assemblies, pep rallies, community based instruction, bus, and other activities.
5. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s mental, medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
6. Works with a variety of handicapping conditions, often simultaneously, such as Emotionally Disturbed, Mental Retardation, Traumatic Brain Injured, Learning Disabled, other Health Impaired, Medically Fragile.
7. Carries out duties with self-direction and self-motivation to recognize and attend to the needs of the students and teacher. Behavior 8. Help manage the behavior of assigned students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive student behavior as needed.
9. Assist in the implementation and documentation of the student behavior management plan as directed by the teacher. Physical 10. Help meet the individual needs of students, including transferring them to and from wheelchairs, lifting and positioning then, and signing or interpreting instructions for them.
11. Gives physical assistance to students as needed, including toileting, feeding, positioning, locomotion, and other services.
12. Work with assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher or recommended by OT/PT.
13. Assist in keeping the classroom, kitchen, and restroom clean during the school day. Community-Based Instruction 14. Accompanies students via public transportation to community-based training sites and provided direct instruction as directed by the teacher. Transportation 15. Assist and/or monitors the transportation of students. Clerical 16. Assist in maintaining student records, including grades, attendance, and student folders.
17. Assist in collating information and preparing reports, including enrollments, material inventories, and CLASS test results.
18. Obtain and disseminates information regarding student lessons and progress. Testing 19. Assist in testing routines such as reading test to students, maintaining quiet environment, etc.
20. Scores and records objective measurement instruments. Other 21. Maintains confidentiality.
22. Participates in professional development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
23. Keeps teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.
24. Performs other job related duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: None. Equipment Used: None. Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Students require constant attention, are of adult size and weight, and cause risk of disease through exposure to body fluids daily. Additionally, students may accidentally cause injury to teachers/aides by running over feet with wheelchair, falling or flailing, biting, pulling hair, or grabbing items of clothing.
