Controller (Homebuilding)

POSITION SUMMARY :
The Homebuilding Controller is responsible for supervising the day-to-day activities of the accounting and accounts payable department within the homebuilding division (First America Homes), which includes accounting, debt, and treasury functions. The Homebuilding Controller will report directly to the Vice President of Finance.
In this role, the Homebuilding Controller will need to be able to use critical thinking skills by taking initiative to identify and resolve problems, especially as the homebuilding division grows into new markets. The Homebuilding Controller should be willing to work in a fast-paced and creative environment that encourages out of the box thinking, efficient problem solving and timely execution.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Responsible for the day-to-day activity of the homebuilding accounting and accounts payable department.
- Manage closing/reporting and assist in the financial planning process, including forecast and budget.
- Be a Business Partner to the different departments and provide comprehensive financial data and analysis to facilitate management decision making.
- Lead in the formulation of internal controls and policies to comply with legislation and established best practices.
- Work with key internal stakeholders to plan and monitor corporate reporting (all events monthly, quarterly, half yearly and Annual)
- Develop and deliver business reports in alignment with agreed objectives, scope, content, frequency, quality, and formatting.
- Interface with the division leaders and managers to project spending, forecast cash flows, and handle the related activities associated with the capital budget.
- Train and develop their accounting team.
- Perform analytical financial statement reviews.
- Review monthly sales and inventory reports.
- Review journal entries and monthly reconciliations.
- Lead the annual audit process and reporting.
- Manage land/lot purchases as well as reconciling loan balances with lenders.
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS :
- Five plus years of public accounting and industry relatable experience with at least three years minimum in public accounting.
- You prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual management reports, manage the process of internal control.
- Continually assessing the effectiveness of the department, including the people, processes, and technologies
- Ability to analyze, produce and interpret financial and budget reports.
- Experience in automation of consolidated financial statements.
- Proven management and leadership skills to develop team of top performers.
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Proficient in accounting and tax preparation software.
- Advanced user in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience reporting, budgeting, planning, and producing operational analytics using an ERP/CPM system.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in Accounting/Finance/Economics
- 7+ Years of Experience in Real Estate Accounting and/or Public Accounting Experience.
- Big 4 Accounting Experience Preferred.
- CPA preferred.
