Lead Coordinator, Environmental and Laboratory Safety

Summary

The Lead Coordinator, Environmental and Laboratory Safety will serve as the Safety Specialist within the Office of Environmental Safety and is responsible for ensuring that the institutional laboratories operate in compliance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations through routine surveillance of labs and other areas where biological, chemical, or radiological hazards are used or stored. This position supports tasks related to the safe removal, relocation, repair, or disposal of equipment typically used within a lab or clinic environment. The role involves laboratory commissioning, decommissioning and relocations. The Lead Coordinator also handles emergency responses to hazardous spills at BCM.

Job Duties

  • Ensure environment, health, and safety compliance within BCM’s research and teaching laboratories by conducting general laboratory inspections of all BCM lab spaces, compiling chemical inventories, updating emergency information for compliance with regulations and guidelines pertaining to the use, handling, and disposal of hazardous biological, chemical, and radiological agents, communicating findings with BCM faculty, staff, and students, and assisting in resolving compliance issues.
  • Provide guidelines and best practices for ensuring lab safety by offering support and guidance to faculty, staff, laboratory supervisors, managers, and students with the development and implementation of appropriate lab safety practices and procedures.
  • Assist BCM employees with ensuring laboratory equipment has been completely cleaned and all hazards have been removed before the equipment is removed, relocated, repaired, or sent out for disposal.
  • Manage hazardous waste across BCM by classifying, packaging, and documenting hazardous and non-hazardous waste with waste vendors and organizing shipments of hazardous and electronic waste.
  • Respond to laboratory incidents by mitigating hazards, securing the area, documenting the incident, ensuring all safety protocols are followed, decontaminating spills or contamination, inspecting and certifying that hazardous materials are removed or neutralized when closing out lab spaces, updating safety documentation, and communicating the status to stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines pertaining to the use, handling, and disposal of hazardous biological, chemical, and radiological agents, and communicate findings with BCM faculty, staff, and students.

  • Assist in resolving compliance issues and ensure that laboratory equipment is free of hazardous substances before relocation, repair, or disposal.
  • Support and guide faculty, staff, laboratory supervisors, and students in developing and implementing appropriate lab safety practices and procedures.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is free of hazardous substances before relocation, repair, or disposal, and assist BCM employees in confirming equipment is completely cleaned and all hazards removed.
  • Respond to laboratory incidents by mitigating hazards, securing the area, documenting the incident, and ensuring all safety protocols are followed while decontaminating spills or contamination.
  • Inspect and certify that hazardous materials are removed or neutralized when closing out lab spaces, ensuring they are safe for the next group to move in.
  • Update safety documentation and communicate status to stakeholders promptly.
  • Classify, package, and document hazardous, electronic and non-hazardous waste across all BCM.
  • Organize shipments and disposal of controlled substances, biological, chemical, radioactive, and electronic waste.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Six years of relevant experience.

Department Specific Criteria

  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license and meet Baylor College of Medicine's driving eligibility requirements, including a clean driving record and a minimum of three years of U.S. driving history.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in basic or applied science or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in environmental health and safety in an academic setting.
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified in Public Health (CPH), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), and Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
