Echocardiographic Ultrasound Technologist, Cardiology

JOB SUMMARY

In this role, the Echocardiographic ultrasound technologist functions independently under the general direction of the Echocardiography Core Laboratory Director and performs high‑level, complex research activities. Responsibilities include echocardiographic analysis, technical protocol development, and data quality assurance. The ideal candidate has experience in diagnostic ultrasonography, preferably in cardiac echocardiography, and is highly motivated to learn new analytical skills.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Required

  • Education
    • Associate's Degree in Ultrasound Technology –or– Graduate of Accredited Sonography Program
  • Experience
    • Clinical training at UTSW may be considered as experience
  • Licenses and Certifications
    • BLS accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross (ARC) Upon Hire
    • Registered with American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS Registry) Upon Hire OR Registered with Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI Registry)

JOB DUTIES

  • General Job Responsibilities
    • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and ensure it is supplied for procedures.
    • Exercise stewardship of hospital resources to meet financial goals.
    • Inspect equipment and accessories, reporting any issues for repair.
    • Respond promptly to inquiries or calls regarding procedures.
    • Communicate equipment or exam issues to staff during shifts.
    • Ensure equitable distribution of departmental workloads.
    • Participate in learning sessions with new employees and students.
    • Assist with scheduling and coordinating exams to ensure smooth workflow.
    • Perform quality control on equipment and report issues promptly.
    • Attend departmental and facility meetings/classes (minimum 90 % attendance).
    • Complete required courses or modules on time.
    • Act in the best interest of patients, personnel, and the facility as assigned.
    • Adhere to time, attendance, and tardiness guidelines.
    • Wear employee ID and follow dress code policy.
    • Assume supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the designated supervisor, when appropriate.
    • Participate in all regulatory compliance activities.
  • Patient Interaction
    • Verify patient identification in accordance with hospital policy.
    • Communicate professionally and clearly with patients.
    • Ensure proper patient preparation and answer questions, evaluating history and symptoms for procedural criteria.
    • Assist patients with dressing, transport, and positioning for exams.
    • Inform patients or families about tests and assess tolerance.
    • Maintain current knowledge and skills for all age groups, ranging from newborn to geriatric.
  • Exam Performance
    • Verify requisitions or charts for valid orders, priority dates, and necessary documentation.
    • Perform high‑quality US examinations following protocols promptly; assist physicians with additional imaging or biopsy procedures as needed.
    • Ensure images and records are correctly labeled with patient identifiers.
    • Apply technical knowledge to accurately perform procedures in a timely manner, meeting age‑specific criteria.
    • Complete exam charges, document imaging, and forward to radiologist promptly.
    • Administer intravenous contrast injections when appropriate and monitor patients for adverse reactions.
  • Job Performance May Include
    • Monitor and train students in current competencies.
    • Assist in orienting and training new staff.
    • Lead technologists to ensure procedures adhere to standards.
    • Participate in modality‑specific QA/QC programs and regulatory compliance.
    • Participate in various accreditation processes as directed.
