Cardiothoracic Surgeon

We re seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Cardiothoracic Surgeon to provide full-time, onsite surgical care at the San Juan VA Medical Center under a long-term federal healthcare contract. This opportunity is ideal for senior-level cardiac surgeons with demonstrated experience in high-acuity procedures and advanced cardiovascular surgical equipment. The selected provider will also play a key role in mentoring staff and standardizing cardiothoracic protocols for veteran care.

Full-Time, On-Site
Monday to Friday (Clinic and Surgical Coverage)

• Must be available for scheduled elective cases and consults

• On-Call :

  • After-hours coverage on Monday and Wednesday

  • 24-hour coverage on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday , and weekends/holidays

• Friday Morning Meetings : Required attendance at 7:30 AM

• Must be onsite within 1 hour of notification for emergencies

5-Year Contract Duration : September 30, 2025 September 29, 2030

• Deliver surgical care and consultative services in accordance with VA standards for cardiothoracic surgery

• Perform inpatient and outpatient cardiothoracic procedures

• Provide post-operative and follow-up care for cardiac surgery patients

• Participate in staff training and education on cardiothoracic protocols and devices

• Ensure accurate documentation in VA systems (CPRS, VistA)

• Respond to emergent cardiac situations with timely and expert surgical interventions

• Comply with HIPAA, Joint Commission, and VA quality standards

• MD or DO from an accredited medical school

• Board Certification or Eligibility in Cardiothoracic Surgery

• Active and unrestricted state medical license

• DEA Registration

• AHA BLS and ACLS Certification

• National Provider Identifier (NPI)

• Minimum 4 years of continuous cardiothoracic surgery experience within the last 5 years

• Must be skilled in the use of advanced cardiac equipment, including:

  • Cardiac perfusion pump

  • Heater-cooler units

  • Impella Cardiac Assist Device

  • Intra-aortic balloon pump

  • Endoscopic Vessel Harvesting (EVH) systems

• No record of OIG exclusions

• Updated Resume (must reflect recent surgical and equipment experience)

• Signed Letter of Intent (template provided)

• Board Certification or Eligibility Documentation

• DEA Certificate

• AHA BLS and ACLS Cards

• Active Medical License

• NPI

• OIG Exclusion Report (online lookup accepted)

• NPDB Report (required for VA submission)

Contract Full-Time
