Position Summary
The Kitchen Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily tasks for the Union Gospel Mission (UGM) kitchen. Establish and maintain relationships with staff, trainees, and volunteers. Plans and leads preparation, serving/delivery of all meals including holiday meals and special events, including donations of needed items from vendors and local restaurants. Assume the role of a mentor in the food service training program.
Responsibilities
- Create the menus and orchestrate meal planning, preparation, and service for the mission.
- Supervise, train, and coach employees, volunteers, and residents working in the kitchen and pantry
- Write and coordinate schedules to optimize volunteer and resident hours while ensuring employee oversight.
- Manage expenses through foresight and creativity, maximizing donations to create healthy and balanced meals.
- Manage supply inventory and pantry organization.
- Helps ensures operations and food preparation areas and equipment are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner that exceeds all applicable Health Department safety rules and regulations.
- Manages and trains others on proper food rotation to prevent waste.
- Collaborates daily with pantry and training kitchen to manage inventory.
- Maintains and ensures completion of required food and temperature logs.
- Holds proper Serve Safe licensing to be able to oversee department.
- Build relationships with volunteers to create a memorable volunteer experience.
- Looks for creative ways to provide exceptional hospitality to guests, training others to do the same.
- Oversee department functions related to the People Team, including timecard approvals, interviewing, and performance management.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 3-5 years’ experience planning and preparing meal services.
- Previous supervisory experience required.
- Experience in the delivery of meal services in large group settings.
- Experience in controlling cost and inventory.
- Ability to obtain donations, grants and contributor assistance.
- A practicing Christian willing to serve and disciple those who enter the mission.
