Salary Range : Minimum of $31,200 annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Job Summary

The Research Scientist Assistant I for the molecular neuroscience lab assists in the performance of assignments requiring a basic working knowledge of engineering or scientific methods, in such areas as research, design or experimental testing.

This is a grant funded position with an expected end date of nine months from date of hire. Continuation is contingent upon funding availability.

Core Responsibilities

1. Handles assignments that require the technical knowledge to modify or adapt routine procedures under the direction of a supervisor to meet special research requirements.
2. Collects and compiles data, computes quantities, extends estimates, and makes and records observations/measurements.
3. Sets up and operates equipment as directed by the supervisor.
4. Assists in maintaining and cleaning laboratory equipment.
5. Inventories supplies and equipment.
6. Attends related research conferences and meetings.
7. Takes a proactive approach to assist co-workers in various tasks, to ensure safety.
8. Performs work tasks in a safe manner and in accordance with work instructions.
9. Proactively makes recommendations to improve safety.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the field of assignment by date of hire.
• This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience and comfort in handling laboratory animals (mice).
• Experience in immunohistochemistry and confocal imaging and image processing.
• Experience with cell cultures, surgical techniques, and animal behavior.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Some knowledge of the basic equipment used in the field of research to which assigned.
• Knowledge of special equipment used in the field of assignment.

Working Conditions

• Laboratory, office, or outdoor fieldwork.
• Requires working with hazardous equipment or materials occasionally.

Physical Demands

• The ability to work safely with chemical disinfectants, handle some unpleasant elements, and tolerate normal odors/airborne is required.

This position will work primarily on campus . Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
