Senior Mechanical Engineer Energy & Industrial
Description
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Act ing as the Mechanical team lead by overseeing a team of junior engineers and designers in coordinating detailed design phases for all aspects of mechanical engineering work
- W ork ing on challenging assignments that include investigating, troubleshooting, and solving a wide variety of mechanical engineering issues
- Develop ing integrated systems designs for the planned work , including :
- D esign, modification, and analysis of power plant mechanical systems , including primary steam/water cycle systems and secondary balance of plant systems
- D esign, modification, and analysis of Oil & Gas mechanical systems /facilities, including compressor stations, meter stations, pump stations, pipelines, gas processing plants, wellhead systems, central gathering facilities, and CO2/CCUS facilities
- P repar ing and reviewing calculations to support equipment sizing, optimization evaluation s , and selection
- P repar ing and reviewing technical specifications for mechanical engineering equipment
- P repar ing and reviewing material lists, equipment lists, line lists
- R eview ing piping drawings (Isometrics, composites, plans, sections, and elevations)
- P repar ing and reviewing engineering studies and technical reports
- Perform ing independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations and drawing preparation
- Coordinat ing and provid ing guidance to other engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers to ensure a complete and timely design
- Perform ing reviews of existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, and present ing findings and recommendations to clients and peers
- Develop ing your career via peer-learning through knowledge sharing with other experienced engineers by way of S&L’s systems of process and associated “Communities of Practice”
- Provid ing guidance as a mentor in the development of less - experienced engineers
- Communicat ing and interact ing with client staff
- There is potential for travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant site locations for construction coordination , field verification of designs , or support ing facility commissioning

This position is based on a hybrid work schedule and will require in-office work 3 days per week in Houston, TX.
Qualifications

Essential skills and experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program is required
- PE License, preferred.
- Five or more years of experience in the design of mechanical engineering systems for non-commercial, heavy industrial plants (power plant - essential, oil & gas, or chemical - valued), with a focus on integrated, detailed system design for new plants, modifications, or replacements; Experience must include the selection of equipment, piping materials, control philosophy, and the preparation of supporting calculations and specifications.
- Ability to take a lead role in the completion of preliminary engineering studies that evaluate multiple solutions to address a given client’s problem or need.
- Sound technical judgement, technical writing skills, and experience with preparing high level bills of materials and needed equipment lists for estimating.
- E xperience in leading an engineering design team through all phases of capital projects or small to medium plant services projects.
- Customer service oriented with passion for high customer satisfaction and achieving project execution excellence.
- Knowledge of industry -related Codes and Standards.

- Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required.
- We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows.
