ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

This is a faculty position responsible to the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine who reports to the Head of the Division of Internal Medicine.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Clinical (85%)

Provides clinical expertise in patient care management, requiring outstanding analytical skills in order to make judgments regarding the patient's medical problems and advise the patient on methods to improve their care. The position also must have the capability to empathize with cancer patients and their families in a manner that is compassionate and positive.

II. Administration / Extramural (10%)

Must have well-developed interpersonal skills and be able to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with peers, senior faculty and subordinates.

1. This faculty member will attend institutional meetings and serve on committees as requested. This may include traveling to meeting(s), listening to meeting deliberations, and reporting meeting outcomes in an appropriate manner using electronic or written communication. In addition, this faculty member will provide verbal feedback and didactic information exchange regarding meeting progress and outcomes.

2. As requested, this faculty member will visually review, understand, synthesize, interpolate, summarize, or provide editorial commentary on manuscripts, grant applications, research literature, or professional communications, verbally or by use of electronic and manual methods.

3. This faculty member will serve in an exemplary manner as a role model to colleagues, students, and support staff.

III. Research (2%)

To develop and maintain an original, creative, and independent research program in Oncologic Emergency Medicine with evidence of high quality and productivity. This requires ongoing publications in peer review journals, development and submission of investigator-initiated grant proposals, and scholarly presentations. Excellent oral and written skills as well as the ability to synthesize information pertaining to the area of research are required. Candidates should be interactive and willing to participate in collaborative studies within and outside the Section/Department.

IV. Education/Teaching (3%)

This individual will engage in the educational objectives of the Department as requested and must have experience in education or training (in classrooms or one-to-one setting) as well as in mentoring of trainees, junior faculty, or staff.

1. Attend and participate in teaching and departmental training activities and individual meetings, which require verbal interaction with colleagues and walking to meeting locations throughout the campus. This includes Division and Departmental seminars, retreats and meetings.

2. The faculty member will serve as a mentor/advisor and provide a balanced, stimulating, ethical, integrated and nurturing educational experience at the highest level of intellectual performance for graduate, postdoctoral and technical personnel.

SUPERVISION
The faculty member reports to the Chair of Emergency Medicine.

The Assistant Professor must have completed the M.D. degree in an accredited medical school or equivalent, must have completed residency training in an approved American Residency Program or equivalent, and be licensed as a physician in the State of Texas. Must be board certified in Emergency Medicine or Internal Medicine (or foreign equivalent if applicable) or obtain board certification within 3 years of employment.

At least 2 years of experience as an Instructor or 5 years post degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist, or GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residency or fellowship).
