Medical Assistant Trainee

The trainees' responsibilities include learning and developing practical skills, participating in online classes, observing all health and safety codes, completing assignments and competencies and successfully completing an accredited Medical Assistant Training Program. After completing the program, trainee will be eligible to earn the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant credential. Training and program costs are covered for trainees who successfully complete the program and commit to a two-year service term.

A successful trainee must have great time management and basic computer skills, be flexible, open and be ready to learn. Outstanding trainees are those who respond well to criticism, build good relationships with colleagues, and ultimately make a lasting impression. Trainees should be well organized, flexible, and willing to assist wherever possible.

The medical assistant is responsible for collaboration with the nursing and provider staff in supporting primary care of the patient. This individual must be capable of prioritizing and organizing tasks related to patient care. The medical assistant is expected to support the Company's mission and adhere to Company policies and procedures, as well as applicable state and federal regulations. He/she is expected to demonstrate superior interpersonal skills, facilitation of support and patient care tasks as part of the patient care team, and effective teamwork.

Trainee Essential Duties:

  • Enroll in training program identified by health center and completing all coursework and exam at a least a passing level
  • Engage in on-the-job learning with designated mentor and learn to perform tasks independently
  • Performing patient care and support tasks (within scope and training)
  • Observe all health and safety procedures and workplace policies
  • Remain open to receiving feedback and strive to continuously improve skills and knowledge
  • Engage with colleagues and patients in a professional, respectful and compassionate way

Representative Duties:

This is intended to cover the minimum essential learning objectives to learn and perform

  • Prepares room and patient for examination. Obtains vital signs and chief complaint. Appropriate documents in the patient record.
  • Follows universal precautions
  • Performs laboratory and diagnostic testing, maintains controls and records.
  • Answers, screens and triages telephone calls. Takes accurate messages and distributes to the appropriate personnel within the guidelines of the practice
  • Schedule tests and referral appointments for patients
  • Administers oral and injectable medication. Transmit prescriptions to pharmacies
  • Engages and helps promote patient/family teaching as appropriate; and provides an educational environment for patients and patient families
  • Provides explanation of lab results, diagnostic testing results and provider orders to patient/family as directed by provider.
  • Assists with cleaning and stocking of exam rooms.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some weekends and evenings
  • Facilitates process for quality specialty medical diagnostic and therapeutic services to be available to patients via appropriate referral and tracking for follow-up.
  • Maintains all logs and required checks (i.e., refrigerator temps, medications, oxygen, etc.)
  • Maintains practice standard by participating in in-services, committees, etc. May assist in developing and implementing quality control and practice policies
  • Inventories, orders and restock areas, as necessary
  • Maintains and cleans equipment, autoclaving procedures and environmental safety as required
  • Participates in patient care equipment maintenance and quality monitoring
  • Ability to provide clerical services and clinical services as required to maintain an effective flow. Cross trained to work both clerically and clinically
  • Ability to provide care for patients, which is age specific to their physical and safety needs, psychosocial concerns and educational level
  • Necessary visual and auditory acuity required to monitor patient's condition and operate department equipment
  • Demonstrates a positive team attitude and has interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately communicate with clients, their families, providers and co-workers
  • Ability to work in an EMR environment
  • Demonstrate knowledge of emergency equipment (location, use, and maintenance).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience & Qualification Guidelines:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Driver's license recommended
  • Functional competency in Reading, Writing and Math
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • A growth mindset and passion for learning
  • Complies with all HIPAA regulations.
  • Capacity to work effectively with different types of people with diversity of age and culture.
  • Demonstrate above average organizational capabilities.
  • Demonstrate above average teamwork capabilities.

Performance Requirements:

  • Courteous, honest and professional
  • Able to communicate and relate well with physicians, clinical support staff and other HKH employees.
  • Able to provide innovative input into the development of the clinic and its processes.
  • Maintains appropriate licensure and certification including meeting and/or exceeding CME requirements.
  • Efficient, organized and accurate.
  • Must pass pre-employment background and drug screen checks

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Multi-task-oriented position including direct patient care may require sitting or standing for long periods. Some bending, stooping, and lifting (up to 50lbs). Must interact with physicians, patients and other office personnel. Must possess socio-economic and cultural sensitivity. May involve contact with angry, upset or ill persons. Will involve potential exposure to blood and body fluids and other hazardous substances. Must have visual acuity and manual dexterity to assist with procedures, perform and interpret lab results, and interface with computer. Must have auditory acuity to handle phone calls and extensive patient interaction.
