Product Engineer, Backend (Senior / Staff / Principal) - US
About Us
Monarch came out of private beta in early 2021. Since that time we have quickly become one of the premier ways to manage your financial life. Customers love the product and we have seen rapid, organic growth. Our users say that Monarch helps them feel more confident in their finances, and more confident in their financial future.
Our founding team consists of product-driven, serial entrepreneurs with multiple exits. Additionally, our CEO was one of the original creators of Mint.com and has a unique perspective on what is needed to meet consumers' needs in this market.
We are passionate about building a company, product and brand that both customers and employees love. We are well-funded by top venture firms and angel investors.
We founded the company as a fully-remote team (pre Covid!) and are open to applicants that live within a 5 hour time zone difference of US Pacific Time.
The Role
The Senior Backend Engineer is crucial for growing and evolving our web and mobile apps, focusing primarily on backend (Python/Django/API) while occasionally jumping into the frontend as needed. This role involves close collaboration with product, design, and engineering teams to ensure we are building robust backend infrastructure with our users in mind. Key responsibilities include: designing backend APIs and database modeling, system architecture, improving backend practices across engineering, creating documentation, and mentoring your peers. You will typically work with a lot of autonomy, and be expected to "own" the full implementation of whatever you work on.
Seniority Level: Senior, Staff, or Principal
Skills
You've been in the trenches as a backend engineer and have a strong grasp of Python and Django. You’re comfortable designing and implementing robust backend architecture.
You enjoy the intricacies of API design and DB modeling, and are comfortable with ambiguity and simplifying complex problems.
While backend development is your primary focus, you’re comfortable stepping into frontend tasks when needed to ensure we can deliver high caliber products to our users.
You consider yourself a "product-centric" engineer and take pride in building something people love.
Working closely with product, design, and frontend teams excites you. You value their input and know how to integrate it into your work.
You’re ready to jump into our on-call rotation, addressing any bugs or errors that arise with a calm, problem-solving mindset.
Sharing your knowledge and helping your team grow is something you’re passionate about. You believe in the power of good documentation and effective mentoring.
