We are seeking an Avionics Housing Designer to join our Lunar Lander Team. In this role, you will work on-site in Houston, TX, as part of a cross-functional engineering team developing, manufacturing, testing, and supporting the on-orbit operation of flight enclosures and mechanical structures for vehicle avionics systems. The ideal candidate is passionate about space exploration, has strong design fundamentals, and thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities:
- Design mechanical enclosures and interfaces for avionics systems on the Lunar Lander platform.
- Generate 3D CAD models, detailed part and assembly drawings, and mechanical interface documentation using Creo or SolidWorks.
- Assist in the development of manufacturing products, including support tooling and assembly processes.
- Participate in the development and integration of PCBAs, connectors, and thermal management hardware such as heat sinks, card locks, and thermal bus bars.
- Address design considerations such as vibration and shock mitigation, grounding, and EMI/EMC shielding.
- Support prototype and flight hardware assembly efforts in coordination with Avionics lab technicians.
- Assist in the qualification and acceptance environmental testing of flight hardware.
- Ensure mechanical designs meet relevant NASA, ESA, and commercial spaceflight standards and requirements.
- Contribute to root cause analysis efforts and support design revisions as needed.
- Actively learn from senior engineers and contribute to a collaborative design culture that emphasizes continuous improvement and technical excellence.
Minimum Requirements:
- B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline with at least 5 years of experience in mechanical design; or M.S. degree with at least 3 years of experience.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as Creo or SolidWorks.
- Familiarity with structural and thermal analysis methods (hand calculations and basic simulation).
- Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 standards for engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Ability to work in a fast-changing environment and adapt to evolving technical challenges.
- Strong desire to learn and take on increased responsibility over time.
Desired Qualifications:
- 3–5 years of hands-on experience in SolidWorks and/or Creo for high-reliability mechanical design.
- Experience designing and developing electronics housings with the following considerations:
- Integration of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs).
- Internal and external connector layouts and backplane interfaces.
- Thermal management strategies: heat sinks, vias, thermal interface materials.
- Shock and vibration isolation techniques.
- EMI/EMC and grounding strategies.
- Design for manufacturability and ease of assembly.
- Experience supporting flight hardware testing, including environmental stress screening and qualification testing.
- Understanding of mechanical design methodology, basic GD&T, and aerospace manufacturing techniques.
