EMS Engineer - Level I
Summary
The EMS Engineer – Level I is responsible for learning and applying the fundamentals of energy management and building automation from a controls engineering perspective. This position works under the supervision of the Engineering Manager , Engineering Team Leaders , Project Managers , and senior-level EMS Engineers (Levels II & III) .
The role involves developing installation submittals, I/O wiring diagrams, bills of material, controller programming, system graphics, and as-built documentation in alignment with company Installation and Commissioning Standards .
At times, the EMS Engineer – Level I may assist higher-level engineers or project managers during system start-up, troubleshooting, testing, and commissioning. This position requires coordination with other trades (e.g., electricians, HVAC technicians) and the ability to adhere to project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
Responsibilities
Technical & Foundational SkillsDemonstrate proficiency with Windows OS and basic computer applications (Word, Excel, email, and web browsers).
Understand and apply company Installation and Commissioning Standards (ARC 156).
Comprehend the basic operation and differences of HVAC equipment.
Apply fundamental electrical knowledge and communicate effectively about electrical concepts.
Read and verify equipment schematics in the field.
Accurately complete and submit timesheets on schedule.
Maintain effective communication and coordination with team members, other departments, and external trades.
Work efficiently both independently and within a team environment.
Manage multiple assignments simultaneously and keep management informed of progress.
Demonstrate initiative in self-learning, particularly with ALC technology and industry best practices.
Strive for continuous improvement and skill development under team leader guidance.
Exhibit punctuality, professionalism, and accountability.
Communicate resource, training, or support needs promptly.
Stay focused on assigned tasks and maintain a strong work ethic.
Identify and interpret equipment on floor plans and schematics.
Develop an understanding of submittals, module sheets, and Requests for Information (RFIs).
Learn WebCTRL navigation, logic page structure, and system layout principles.
Follow company Engineering Standards for all deliverables.
Understand input/output types (binary, analog, universal, network).
Create detailed submittal packages including control diagrams, network risers, bills of material, and sequences of operation.
Build accurate databases, floorplans, and system graphics in accordance with standards.
Gain familiarity with Eikon programming, graphic libraries, and project implementation processes.
Maintain document integrity per company network and preservation protocols.
Operate the Engineering Design Suite (EDS) with minimal supervision.
Identify project scope coverage and potential discrepancies early in the project lifecycle.
Develop knowledge of approved materials, manufacturers, and vendors.
Learn WebCTRL functionality including alarms, schedules, trends, and system parameters.
Manage workload effectively to meet deadlines and quality standards through proactive communication.
Utilize and complete all project checklists, red books, and documentation processes.
Gather and compile red-line markups and closeout materials promptly.
Prepare complete as-built and operation/maintenance packages in coordination with the project team.
