Teacher of The Deaf (TOD License & Certification)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervisory responsibilities include supporting and managing teaching assistant, as well as mentoring teachers who do not have a degree or knowledge in Deaf Education.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary Purpose:
- Teachers of the Deaf are responsible for managing classroom schedules, curriculum implementation, and student supervision during the school day.
- Teachers of the Deaf write individualized goals for students, track formal and informal data for progress monitoring, and participate in decisions to determine the most appropriate educational placement and plan for each child they teach.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assure that the development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of all educational programs presented on site are aligned with the requirements of program participants and in consideration of the DISH mission.
- Develop, prepare, organize and evaluate curricula for all onsite educational programs ensuring appropriate standards and mission are met.
- Develops and implements educational programs for children with hearing loss aged 12 months – 5 years old.
Lesson Planning and Data Tracking:
- Turn in lessons and notes weekly using formal and informal assessments; keep up to date data on each student in developmental areas and academic skills; Demonstrate knowledge of each child’s hearing and intervention history.
Student Supervision and Daily Needs:
- Maintains active watch of students when on duty during class time, lunch, transitions, recess, etc.
- Completes daily amplification checks of student equipment and troubleshoots accordingly.
- Supervises bathroom needs and provides toileting assistance as needed including, but not limited to, diapering and changing soiled clothes, etc.
- Organizational skills, classroom management, composure in stressful situations, patience when handling children, diagnostic teaching skills, flexibility during schedule changes and special events.
- Collect and maintains all required data on students.
- Monitors and documents student progress, attendance, and behavior.
- Completes language, listening, developmental, and academic testing upon enrollment of each student and three times per year for parent conferences.
- Participates in parent conferences 3-4 times a year.
- Develops and adapts lesson plans to individual student needs.
- Assumes direct responsibility for students during school hours.
- Supervise junior staff to ensure that safety and programs are run according to the requirements of the DISH protocols and procedures.
- Perform teaching observations with Education Coordinator as appropriate on regular basis.
- Carry out and assist junior staff in developing appropriate student behavior through positive reinforcement strategies and techniques.
- Maintain appropriate contact with parents regarding child behaviors, classroom management, and parent expectations.
- Help with before/after school programs as well as Summer programs as needed by Education Coordinator.
- Assist Public Relations Manager in the promotion of the DDC programs, enrichment/community programs through phone calls, postal mail, email, etc.
- Provide supervision of students at all times during the duration of classes and programs, extending to the release of students to guardians.
- Maintain the highest possible degree of safety inside and outside of the classroom and surrounding building areas (ie. Playground, community events, etc.).
- Make weekly updates to parents via Brightwheel app, to be sent out by Friday at 5pm.
- Prepare and distribute monthly and weekly DDC schedules, units, events, to staff as well as parents.
- Maintaining positive communication with program participants, their teachers/parents/guardians, as well as all visitors to the center.
Professional Responsibilities:
- Participates in teacher meetings, all staff meetings, and other assignments.
- Maintains a Texas teaching certificate in Deaf Education.
- Coordinates activities for volunteers and substitutes assigned to the classroom.
- Attend field trips, marketing events, and other school functions throughout the year.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Texas Certification in Deaf Education.
- 5+ years in Deaf education or special education setting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to work well under pressure and manage sensitive or controversial subjects with tact, kindness, and professionalism.

Parents and children will work with teachers, speech therapists, audiologists, and occupational therapists based on their child’s comprehensive evaluation. Services are offered year-round by our wonderful staff and parents are always encouraged to be involved and ask any questions that may come up in the process. Our staff works together WITH the families in order to keep constant communication on child development and progress throughout the year.
