Sheet Metal Mechanic
This role focuses on the layout, fabrication, assembly, installation, modification, and repair of sheet metal products and HVAC components on commercial and industrial jobsites. The sheet metal mechanic works from blueprints and shop drawings to install high-quality ductwork and related systems safely, accurately, and on schedule. The position involves hands-on work with a variety of metals, tools, and fabrication equipment, supporting large, complex projects and fast-track schedules in the field.
Responsibilities- Install, fabricate, and repair sheet metal ductwork, HVAC components, hangers, fittings, and related systems in accordance with blueprints, specifications, and industry standards.
- Read and interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, shop drawings, sketches, and product specifications to determine layout, sequence of operations, and methods of fabrication and installation.
- Lay out and mark dimensions, cut lines, and reference points on sheet metal using templates, measuring tools, squares, and gauges to ensure accurate fabrication.
- Select appropriate gauge and type of sheet metal, including galvanized, stainless steel, and aluminum, based on project requirements and specifications.
- Set up and operate fabrication equipment such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, and routers to cut, bend, form, and shape sheet metal components.
- Use hand and power tools, including saws, grinders, drills, and routers, to cut, trim, and fit sheet metal parts safely and efficiently.
- Trim, file, grind, deburr, and smooth metal surfaces to prepare components for assembly and installation.
- Assemble components using welding, soldering, brazing, riveting, screwing, fastening, and sealing techniques to create complete duct systems and assemblies.
- Install and secure ductwork and related systems in the field, ensuring proper alignment, support, and connection to HVAC equipment and other building systems.
- Inspect in-process and completed assemblies and installations to verify conformance to drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
- Identify and resolve installation issues in the field by coordinating with foremen, project managers, and other trades.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following OSHA regulations and site-specific safety requirements.
- Follow jobsite safety practices, including proper use of tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment, and report any hazards or incidents promptly.
- Support large and complex projects, as well as accelerated-schedule work, by managing time effectively and completing tasks on schedule.
- Travel to and report on time to various jobsites across the DFW metro area as required by project needs.
- At least 1+ year of hands-on experience as a sheet metal technician, mechanic, or installer in a commercial or industrial setting; 3+ years of experience to qualify as a mechanic and 1+ year as a helper.
- Demonstrated experience in construction-related sheet metal installation and fabrication.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, and shop drawings accurately.
- Proficiency in sheet metal fabrication and installation, including HVAC ductwork installation.
- Strong skills in layout and measurement using templates, gauges, and standard measuring tools for accurate takeoffs.
- Proficient use of hand tools and power tools, including saws, grinders, drills, and routers.
- Experience operating fabrication equipment such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, and similar machinery.
- Knowledge of metal cutting, bending, forming, and assembly techniques for sheet metal products.
- Familiarity with HVAC duct installation and standard industry fabrication practices, including spiral duct and mechanical systems.
- Ability to perform basic welding, brazing, and soldering (preferred as a core skill in the field).
- Competence in quality control and inspection of fabricated and installed systems to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Understanding of jobsite safety practices and OSHA compliance requirements.
- OSHA 10 certification.
- Reliable transportation and the ability to report to jobsites across the DFW metro area.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work at heights, and stand, kneel, and bend for extended periods.
- Completion of a sheet metal apprenticeship or an equivalent trade school program.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- Experience with light welding, brazing, and soldering beyond basic skills.
- Certifications for operating forklift, scissor lift, or boom lift.
- Experience working on ground-up commercial construction projects.
- Experience on specialized projects such as healthcare facilities, data centers, or industrial projects.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate effectively with foremen, project managers, and other trades.
- Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, code-compliant installations.

Work EnvironmentThis role is based on active construction jobsites, including a new amphitheatre project in the McKinney area and other locations across the DFW metro. You will work primarily in outdoor and partially enclosed environments typical of ground-up commercial construction. The position involves regular use of hand and power tools, as well as fabrication equipment such as shears, brakes, presses, and forming rolls. You may work at heights on ladders, scaffolding, or lifts and will handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Work hours follow standard construction schedules and may include overtime depending on project timelines and accelerated schedules. Safety is a priority, with strict adherence to OSHA and site-specific safety requirements, including appropriate personal protective equipment and compliance with equipment certifications for forklifts, scissor lifts, and boom lifts as needed.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $32.00/hr.
