Department Administrator - Endocrine Neoplasia and Hormonal Disorders

MD Anderson's Endocrine Neoplasia and Hormonal Disorders department provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for patients with endocrine system tumors, both malignant and benign. The Department Administrator serves as the primary administrator and chief business officer for an academic department. This role offers the opportunity to partner closely with clinical, research, and educational leaders to advance exceptional patient care, innovative research, and specialized training programs.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Operations Management (Clinical, Academic, and Research)

Develops, implements and manages effective administrative processes to ensure operational efficiency and quality outcomes. Designs systems and processes which enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Assures that effective internal controls are developed and maintained to ensure integrity of the department/division/institution. Works closely with the Center Administrative Director (s) to develop operational plans for each fiscal year and monitors the progress of these plans. Works closely with the Center Administrative Director (s) to ensure facility fees are charged appropriately, demonstrating understanding of billing processes and reimbursement guidelines. Develops and manages all aspects of research administration meeting institutional mandates. Directs all facets of human resources activity including the recruitment, appointment, credentialing, and performance evaluation of classified staff, educational appointees, and faculty. Financial Management

Prepares, justifies, administers and monitors all clinical and research budgets, business proposals and reconciles accounts according to institutional and state guidelines. Oversees the billing process and monitors reimbursement; ensures the timely credentialing of departmental providers in Medicare, Medicaid, other governmental and private insurance and managed care plans.

Strategic Planning and Implementation

In collaboration with the Department Chairman, coordinates the development of both long-term and short-term strategic business plans for the department. Implements and evaluates plans to achieve financial and operational results for the department which reflect departmental, divisional and institutional goals and objectives. Systematically monitors and prioritizes goals to achieve the department's mission and vision. Produces reports for individuals, the department, the division, or the institution to support decision making and analyze outcomes. Meets routinely with department members to keep them apprised of the department's and/or their individual progress. Serves as a liaison for marketing and development initiatives.

EDUCATION

• Required: Bachelor's Degree

• Preferred: Master's Degree

WORK EXPERIENCE

• Required: Seven years progressive and responsible healthcare / research or business management experience to include three years in a management role. OR

• Required: Five years progressive and responsible healthcare, research or business management experience to include three years in a management role, with Master's degree. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.

• Preferred: The ideal candidate is highly skilled with extensive experience in academic, clinical, and research operations and healthcare finance. They possess strong knowledge of pre-award negotiations for clinical trials, along with direct clinical research finance expertise and a comprehensive understanding of service line activities. This individual is detail-oriented and demonstrates the ability to partner closely with the department chair to advance strategic goals, support initiatives, and drive tactical operational transformation that enhances efficiency and promotes growth. They are adept at building and maintaining successful professional relationships with leadership, faculty, staff, and other key stakeholders, supported by exceptional communication skills that enable clear information sharing, open dialogue, conflict resolution, and effective collaboration. Additionally, they should have experience coordinating and overseeing human resources activities including hiring, onboarding, promotions, and direct people and performance management while also being deeply invested in staff development through career pathing. Ability to take an assertive, independent and innovative approach to their work will be important to successfully navigate complex challenges and lead the department toward continued excellence.
