Primary Purpose:

Implement comprehensive appraisals to students receiving special education services. Evaluate the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students referred for special education services or receiving special education services. Provide diagnostic information and work cooperatively with instructional personnel to provide the most appropriate programs for students with disabilities. Serve as a member of the multi-disciplinary team for the campus(es) to which they are assigned. Ensure district compliance with all legal issues.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Master's, Specialist's, or Doctoral degree in psychology from accredited college or university

Licensed by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of procedures for assessing achievement and intellectual, emotional, and behavioral

functioning for educational purposes

Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies, including behavior management

interventions

Knowledge of psycho-social development

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Assessment

1. Assume responsibility for the organization of data collected by the appraisal process into a Comprehensive Individual Assessment (CIA) identifying areas of emotional disturbance.

2. Select and administer assessments and observations to evaluate the intellectual, emotional, and behavioral functioning of referred students. Determine student eligibility for special education services according to federal and state regulations.

3. Develop psychological evaluation reports.

4. Conduct or participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with appropriate placement and development of Individual Education Plans (IEP) for students according to district procedures.

5. May serve as case manager and implement the special education assessment process for students on assigned campuses.

Consultation

6. Provide consultation and interpretation of appraisal results to staff members and parents. Consult with teachers and relevant staff concerning the educational needs of students, interpretation of assessment data, and implementation of behavior intervention plans in managing disruptive students.

7. Meet with parents to discuss pertinent background information and test results.

8. Consult with psychologists, psychiatrists, medical doctors, and community agencies concerning intellectual, emotional, and behavioral functioning of students as needed.

9. Present staff development training in assigned schools to enable school personnel to identify and work more effectively with students with emotional, social, and behavioral disturbances.

10. Attend ARD's for children diagnosed or suspected of having an emotional disturbance.

Program Management

11. Maintain accurate records of students who are assessed for emotional problems.

12. Attend Special Education support staff meetings and other meetings as scheduled.

13. Interpret the philosophy and rationale of the Special Education Department within the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD to the school and community.

14. Seek ways to increase professional growth and development.

15. Keep up with current research in the area of emotional disturbance.

16. Keep up with the requirements of the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists for licensure as an L.S.S.P.

17. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of psychological services and assessment procedures and make changes based on findings.

18. Participate in the selection of assessment materials and equipment.

19. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required, including case records, test results, statistical data, and test inventories.

20. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy. Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations.

21. May provide clinical supervision to interns or practicum students

22. Perform all other duties as deemed necessary by the Superintendent or designee.

Posture: Frequent sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds), occasional heaving lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint; assisting non-ambulatory students

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases; may require district-wide travel

Mental Demands: Must be able to maintain a high level of concentration and control emotional stress in current work environment. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret and implement policy, procedures, and data; coordinate district functions; maintain emotional control under stress.
