Operating Engineer

MalaceHR is seeking an experienced Operating Engineer to provide short-term, onsite technical building maintenance support within a commercial facility environment. This role is responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide range of building systems.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical expertise in at least one trade (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or central plant operations) while maintaining working knowledge across multiple disciplines. Professionalism and strong client interaction skills are essential in this customer-facing role.

Key Responsibilities

Facility Maintenance & Operations

• Operate, maintain, and repair building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, structural, fire/life safety, and control systems
• Perform preventive maintenance and routine inspections to ensure optimal system performance
• Monitor equipment, record readings, and make necessary adjustments
• Troubleshoot system issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions

Equipment & System Management

• Maintain HVAC systems through cleaning, inspection, calibration, and component replacement
• Ensure all systems operate in compliance with applicable standards and regulations
• Support central plant and mechanical system operations as needed

Work Orders & Vendor Coordination

• Manage maintenance tasks, inventory control, and purchasing of supplies
• Monitor work performed by outside contractors to ensure quality and cost efficiency
• Assist in coordinating contracted maintenance services

Safety & Compliance

• Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean, hazard-free work environment
• Handle and store hazardous materials in accordance with regulations
• Identify potential safety risks and recommend corrective actions
• Perform periodic checks of tools and equipment inventory

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 5–7 years of experience in commercial or industrial building maintenance
• Strong experience maintaining and repairing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems
• Ability to troubleshoot complex building system issues and implement solutions
• EPA 608 Type II Certification
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Preferred Qualifications

• EPA 608 Universal Certification
• Journeyman license in a related trade (electrical, HVAC, plumbing, etc.)
• Two years of technical or trade schooling (HVAC, electrical systems, refrigeration, etc.)
