Staff Accountant
Description
The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, operational banking transactions, payroll processing and other Finance support activities as assigned while ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting principles and regulations. They play a vital role in supporting the organization's mission by effectively maintaining its financial resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily accounting activities to meet deadlines and guidelines in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and FASB Accounting Standards; assist in documenting and implementing accounting policies and procedures.
- Participate in the month-end close process by preparing journal entries and performing bank and account reconciliations.
- Maintain daily cash receipt records utilizing various internal and external reporting for proper coding, tracking and designation of funds.
- Maintain and update accounts receivable records by identifying and posting new AR invoices and payments.
- Process and record remote deposits as needed.
- Coordinate with Troop Banking staff on ACH transactions and managing the collection process for past due product sales and parent debt.
- Maintain process for additional insurance purchases by Troops or external groups.
- Provide accounting and finance support for Retail sales function by obtaining sales reports and keeping a monthly inventory reconciliation as well as filing quarterly sales tax returns.
- Prepare biweekly payroll processing and submission as needed.
- Provide payroll support including journal entry import, processing of tax forms and reconciliation of payroll and employee benefits entries in the general ledger.
- Manage online purchasing accounts and staff credit card account maintenance.
- Provide support and analyses as required in connection with annual financial audit.
- Ensure accuracy, completeness and confidentiality of financial and payroll data.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulations, including IRS guidelines.
- Adhere to council defined internal financial controls and policies to ensure that the council’s assets are protected.
- Provide professional, quality customer service to all customers (i.e. donors, members, volunteers, staff and other community contacts).
- Demonstrate commitment to the Girl Scout mission by representing GSHPA in a positive and professional manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of council-wide initiatives and/or cross functional teams to further the mission of GSHPA.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required; 0-3 years of professional experience preferred.
- Experience with accounting software, specifically Sage Intacct, preferred.
- Experience with payroll processing preferred.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, including those standards related to non-profit entities.
- Ability to learn new software and processes.
- Proficient in MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, and virtual meeting platforms.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
- Proficient mathematical and analytical skills.
- Proficient time management and organizational skills.
- Effectively identify, analyze, and solve problems.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license; access to reliable transportation required.
- Pass and maintain required background clearances.
- Travel throughout the council, as needed.
- Efficiently operate standard office equipment.
- Lift/carry 20 pounds.
- Sitting or standing for a moderate period of time is required.
