A shop foreman who oversees both welding/fabrication and mechanical assembly departments is responsible for managing the entire production process from raw materials to a finished product . This requires a combination of specialized knowledge and general supervisory duties, with distinct functions for each department.
We are looking for a skilled individual that is excited to be a part of changing how the world views our most critical resource - Water.
The role is based in our Round Rock, TX facility. Schedule for this role is Monday - Thursday 5:00am-3:30pm with minimal travel.
What is the role?
Welding and fabrication department
- Workflow management: Plan and coordinate daily fabrication activities, including cutting, forming, and welding, to meet production schedules and deadlines.
- Technical oversight: Read and interpret blueprints, job orders, and welding procedure specifications (WPS) to guide the team and ensure products meet precise engineering requirements.
- Resource allocation: Assign tasks to welders and fabricators based on their skill sets and the specific needs of each project.
- Quality control: Implement and enforce quality standards, including inspecting finished welds and fabricated parts to ensure they meet project specifications and are free of defects.
- Inventory management: Track and manage the inventory of raw materials, such as metal stock, welding wire, and gases. Order new supplies as needed to prevent production delays.
- Equipment maintenance: Oversee the maintenance of welding machines, plasma cutters, saws, and other fabrication equipment to ensure they are in safe and efficient working condition.
- Safety enforcement: Ensure all employees strictly follow safety protocols for welding and fabrication, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and hot work procedures.
Mechanical equipment assembly department
- Assembly coordination: Direct and organize the daily assembly of mechanical components and equipment according to production timelines.
- Instruction interpretation: Read and interpret complex assembly drawings, blueprints, and work instructions to ensure components are fitted and assembled correctly.
- Troubleshooting: Assist the assembly team in diagnosing and resolving technical or mechanical issues that arise during the assembly process.
- Q uality assurance: Conduct in-process and final inspections to verify that assembled equipment meets all quality standards and specifications before shipment or testing.
- Testing and adjustment: Oversee the testing of equipment after assembly to ensure proper performance. Make any necessary adjustments or repairs to achieve optimal functionality.
- P rocess improvement: Identify areas for improvement in the assembly process to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality. Implement lean manufacturing practices where applicable.
- Tooling and equipment management: Ensure that the assembly department's tools, fixtures, and testing equipment are properly maintained, calibrated, and used correctly.
Shared managerial duties (both departments)
- Personnel management: Hire, train, and mentor employees. Conduct performance reviews and address personnel issues, including disciplinary action when necessary.
- Safety leadership: Conduct safety meetings, enforce overall shop-wide safety regulations, and investigate any accidents or near-misses.
- Interdepartmental communication: Coordinate with engineering, sales, and purchasing teams to relay information on project requirements, material needs, and production status.
- Reporting: Maintain accurate records of production, labor hours, and costs. Provide regular status reports to upper management on the progress of jobs.
- S hop organization: Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient working environment in both departments to maximize productivity and reduce hazards.

Foundational qualifications
- Experience in a trades position: A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience as a skilled welder, fabricator, or mechanic is essential. This experience is the foundation for understanding the technical processes, quality standards, and challenges faced by the team.
- Blueprint mastery: The ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and schematics is critical for both departments.
Technical proficiency
- Welding and fabrication expertise: A foreman must have comprehensive knowledge of different welding processes (e.g., GMAW, SMAW, FCAW, TIG), cutting methods (e.g., plasma, oxy-fuel), and fabrication tools. Experience with CNC machinery and metal forming is also beneficial.
- Welding certification: An advanced certification, such as the American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS), can be a significant advantage. This demonstrates expertise in welding technology and its management.
- Safety certification: Familiarity with safety standards and protocols, such as OSHA training, is mandatory.
- A strong candidate should be committed to ongoing learning, keeping up with new technologies, and updating skills through seminars and certifications in areas like Lean Manufacturing
- Mechanical assembly knowledge: A solid understanding of mechanical systems, assembly techniques, and the proper use of hand and power tools is necessary. This includes experience with hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, especially for complex equipment.
- Quality control: The ability to perform quality inspections on welded, fabricated, and assembled components is vital. This includes ensuring work meets precise specifications and is free of defects.
Supervisory and leadership skills
- Prior supervisory experience: Experience in a team lead, senior technician, or assistant foreman role is highly preferred. This demonstrates the ability to manage and motivate personnel.
- Leadership and management: Excellent communication, delegation, and conflict-resolution skills are crucial for managing a diverse workforce with varying skill levels.
- Problem-solving: Must have strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities to quickly diagnose issues and address production bottlenecks.
- Organizational skills: Strong planning abilities are needed to schedule tasks, manage workflow, allocate resources, and ensure deadlines are met.
