Senior Accounting Specialist
Location: Houston, TX (Onsite – 5 Days per Week)
Position Summary
A respected Houston-based nonprofit organization is seeking a detail-oriented Accounting Specialist to support its finance leadership team. This role partners closely with the Director of Finance and Chief Financial Officer to manage day-to-day accounting operations and ensure adherence to established accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
The ideal candidate brings nonprofit accounting experience, strong technical knowledge of GAAP, and the ability to operate effectively in a mission-driven environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Review, verify, and post revenue and expense transactions within accounting systems, spreadsheets, and databases
Ensure all payments are processed accurately and in a timely manner
Prepare and record adjusting journal entries
Respond to vendor and internal inquiries regarding financial matters
Assist with annual budget preparation and monitoring
Support month-end and year-end close processes
Maintain compliance with organizational policies and accounting standards, including FASB guidelines
Serve as an active member of the Accounting and Business Administration team
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
Minimum of 3 years of nonprofit accounting experience
Required Skills & Competencies
Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
Experience working with accounting and database systems
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
High level of accuracy and attention to detail
Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize deadlines
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and sound judgment
Ability to research and interpret authoritative accounting guidance and apply findings appropriately
Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods of computer use
Occasional movement throughout office spaces
Ability to lift or move items up to 20 pounds

Work Environment
This is a full-time, onsite position based in Houston, Texas . The Accounting Specialist works in a professional office environment in a shared space alongside Human Resources and administrative staff. The role requires collaboration across departments and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a structured, fast-paced setting.
Standard business hours apply, with occasional additional hours required during month-end and year-end close cycles.
