Nurse Manager- Medical Surgical

Summary: Has 24-hour accountability for the quality and efficiency of the department's nursing care. Responsible for maintaining staffing within the productivity standard and when variances occur, he/she investigates contributing factors. Is responsible for the performance improvement planning and monitoring for the department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Service:

  • Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.
  • Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance.
  • Adheres to all SJMC policies on Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI)
  • Participates as a productive member of the Nursing Services leadership team.
  • Serves as a change agent, assisting staff in understanding the importance, necessity, impact, and process of change.

People:

  • Collaborates with inter and interprofessional colleagues to ensure quality outcomes.
  • Maintains visibility and open communication within the facility.
  • Assesses, addresses, records and tracks staff competence.
  • Fosters a proactive vs. reactive approach to problem identification and resolution.
  • Actively participates on committees and task forces to meet goals.
  • Promotes staff retention.
  • Provides staff performance feedback to director.
  • Ensures personnel management is consistent with state and federal laws and facility policy and procedure.
  • Utilizes progressive disciplinary action process to address staff performance and behavior issues in a timely manner.

Quality:

  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Promotes of a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices.
  • Identifies risks and hazards to patients through various risk assessments, with actions taken to mitigate patient harm.
  • Advocates for patient rights while supporting regulatory standards.
  • Champions the reduction of hospital acquired conditions through improved compliance with patient safety bundles and/or other formal performance improvement programs.
  • Completes annual education requirements.

  • Makes appropriate and timely decisions, considering patient safety and facility needs.
  • Monitors and trends Performance Improvement activities and makes suggestions for improvements as needed. Appropriately involves the nursing staff in this process.
  • Listen to and honor patient and family perspectives and choices.
  • Acknowledge the patient's and family's knowledge, values, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds to ensure they are incorporated into the planning and delivery of care.
  • Communicate and share complete and unbiased information with the patients and families in ways that are affirming and useful.
  • Ensure that patients and families receive timely, complete, and accurate information to effectively participate in care and decision making.
  • Encourage and support patients and families in participating in care and decision making at the level they choose.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, healthcare practitioners, and healthcare leaders in policy and program development, implementation and evaluation in facility design, in professional education, as well as delivery of care.
  • Provides essential leadership for advancing the practice of the patient- and family-centered care.
  • Ensures that the development and dissemination of materials, policy, and training increase the understanding and skills necessary to build effective partnerships.
  • Actively solicits the ideas and perspectives of patients, families, clinicians, and staff encouraging everyone to share their safety stories.
  • Consistently circulates and talks with staff, clinicians, patients, and families.
  • Offers empathy to a patient and/or impacted by an adverse event.
  • Encourage the concept that "just culture" should prevail.
  • Understands that a solution may create a "new way of doing things" that is not how it has always been done but is the right thing to do.
  • Takes ownership of a patient safety related issue and openly acknowledges an ongoing problem requiring attention.
  • Other duties as assigned

Growth:

  • Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments.
  • Enhances the patient experience by fostering a positive relationship with customers.
  • Contributes to improving HCAHPS results.

Finance:

  • Promotes stewardship of hospital resources while ensuring quality patient care.
  • Maintains staffing within productivity standards and investigates variances and reports findings in a timely fashion. Adjusts staffing for acuity and unusual situations.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse accepted by Texas State Board of Nursing to engage in professional nursing
  • Four or more years of practice experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing procedures, processes, and acute care organizations.
  • Technical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to area in order to effectively and work collaboratively with the leadership team and staff.
  • Certification requirements as defined by the certification policy.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Adept using Microsoft Office, online application

Preferred:

  • Bi or Multilingual.
  • Baccalaureate degree.
  • Previous leadership experience.
  • National Certification as recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center within three years of appointment.
