Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collects, processes, compares, and classifies fingerprints. Assists in the identification of suspects and unidentified victims. On request completes comparisons of latent prints previously filed as evidence in unsolved cases. Work is completed without unreasonable delay and with minimal error.
  • Responds to major crime scenes and supervises the collection, processing, and preserving of evidence in a manner that avoids misclassification or contamination of evidence and is performed in accordance with department procedures.
  • Is proficient in the operation, care, and maintenance of chemicals, processing agents, equipment, tools, fingerprint classification equipment; photography equipment; video/digital imaging technology; and other multi-media software and equipment. Forwards relevant data and/or information to the appropriate investigator and/or agency.
  • Prepares reports on crime scene search, identification and latent prints processing in a timely manner and forwards same to supervisors and appropriate investigators and/or agencies. Maintains and ensures accuracy of monthly statistics log for the Crime Scene Unit.
  • Is knowledgeable and proficient in the use of computers and computer software designed to produce computer-generated composite sketches. Works with investigators and victims and/or witnesses to produce composite suspect sketches.
  • Works on-call status as scheduled and responds after hours as needed. Testifies in court when required.
  • Occasionally conduct community education presentations to organizations, schools, or at events.
  • May perform other assignments and special projects as required.
  • Regular and timely attendance is required as well as the ability to get along with others in a professional and cordial manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma / GED required;
  • Associate's or two-year degree from an accredited University/College or Technical school;
  • and/or two (2) year related experience and/or training;
  • or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. The ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Must be a minimum of 20 years of age.
  • Preferred: Basic to Advanced Fingerprint Classification training.
SPECIALIZED KSA’S
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of or demonstrate the ability to learn the use and application of computer software relevant to this position; fingerprint classification; latent fingerprint development; basic and crime scene photography and basic biology/anatomy. Keyboarding speed of 30wpm.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
