Duties: Under general supervision, the Equipment Operator I operates a variety of heavy equipment and commercial vehicles in support of the construction, maintenance, repair, and improvement of City streets, drainage systems, rights-of-way, parks, utility infrastructure, and other public facilities. Performs skilled and semi-skilled work involving excavation, grading, hauling, paving, drainage maintenance, utility installation, and emergency response operations. Equipment Operation: Safely operates a variety of heavy equipment and commercial vehicles, including but not limited to: Pickup trucks, Dump trucks, Stake body and flatbed trucks, Front-end loaders, Backhoes, Excavators and track hoes, Tractors and attachments, Other specialized equipment assigned to the department. Demonstrates proficiency in equipment operation while adhering to all applicable safety regulations and departmental procedures. Loads, transports, unloads, and secures equipment on trailers and lowboys using proper tie-down methods, chains, binders, and safety procedures. Operates equipment in confined spaces, active roadways, and other challenging work environments while maintaining awareness of surrounding personnel, traffic, utilities, and property. Construction and Maintenance Activities: Performs excavation, grading, trenching, ditching, backfilling, and earthmoving operations. Assists with the construction, repair, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, driveways, drainage systems, culverts, utility lines, sewer lines, stormwater systems, and water mains. Installs culverts, drainage structures, and erosion control measures. Assists with asphalt paving, roadway repairs, and related maintenance activities. Performs maintenance of parks, ball fields, rights-of-way, medians, and other public grounds as assigned. Utilizes elevation and grade-control equipment to ensure proper drainage and construction specifications. Operates inspection camera systems and related technology to assess drainage infrastructure and identify maintenance needs. Safety and Traffic Control: Establishes safe work zones through the placement of traffic control devices, barricades, warning signs, cones, and other safety equipment. Directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic through or around work zones in accordance with approved traffic control standards. Complies with all City, State, Federal, and departmental safety regulations. Identifies unsafe conditions and takes immediate corrective action when appropriate. Reports accidents, injuries, equipment failures, and hazardous conditions promptly to supervisory personnel. Participates in safety meetings, training programs, and ongoing safety improvement initiatives. Equipment Inspection and Maintenance: Conducts daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment. Checks fuel levels, fluids, tires, hydraulic systems, lights, brakes, safety equipment, and operational controls. Performs routine preventive maintenance, including lubrication, cleaning, minor adjustments, and replacement of basic wear items. Documents inspection findings and reports mechanical deficiencies requiring repair. Maintains equipment in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition. Leadership and Team Support: Assists supervisors in coordinating daily work assignments and project priorities. Provides guidance and instruction to crew members regarding work methods, safety procedures, and equipment operation. Assists in training new employees on departmental policies, operational procedures, and equipment use. Promotes teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and effective communication within assigned crews. Customer Service and Operational Excellence: Interacts professionally and courteously with residents, contractors, vendors, and fellow employees. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and enhance service delivery. Supports departmental goals through cooperation, flexibility, and a commitment to quality public service. Must have and maintain, without interruption, required certifications and licenses. Works assigned schedule and complies with the City's timekeeping and attendance policies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). Minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment beyond ordinary passenger vehicles. Documented minimum of 120 hours operating heavy equipment or equivalent demonstrated proficiency. Valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a good driving record. Working knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, and construction practices. Ability to manage personnel, materials, and time effectively. Employees occupying CDL-required positions are subject to federally mandated and unannounced drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying materials, kneeling, crouching and bending; pushing, pulling and reaching; and standing for prolonged periods of time. Ability to work effectively and safely outdoors in all weather conditions. PREFERRED: Completion of recognized equipment operation training programs (e.g., TML or A&M Extension). Traffic Control I (Flagging) certification. Utility Safety, Trenching, and Shoring safety certifications. Class A CDL for operating heavy equipment.

  • Civilian employees accumulate vacation at the following rates:
    • Less than 6 years of service - two weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 6 to less than 11 years of service - three weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 11 to less than 21 years of service – four weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 21 to less than 26 years of service – five weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 26 years of service and up – six weeks of vacation per year.
