Oncology Advanced Practice Provider - Clinical Cancer Prevention

Position is for Oncology Advanced Practice Provider - Hybrid

The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Provider is to provide direct high quality outpatient care in the Nellie B. Connally Breast Center at MD Anderson. The APP will work with designated breast medical oncologists in the department of Clinical Cancer Prevention to manage patient's prescribed diagnosis, treatment plans, and other identified clinical needs. Will conduct comprehensive assessments, manage chemotherapy-related side-effects, provide survivorship care, triage and support of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, social workers, dietitians, clergy, etc. He/she will act under the authority and supervision of the attending physician and in accordance with regulations, hospital policy, protocols, and clinical pathways. Will perform procedures, prescribe treatment and sign prescriptions in accordance with institution and state requirement.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Patient Care

Provides quality patient care in relation to the patient's prescribed diagnosis, treatment, age group, development and other identified needs. This involves talking to patients and patients families. Must be able to verbally communicate findings to physician and family members.
Assesses health status by performing the medical history, physical examination and psychosocial assessment. Must be able to communicate in a clear and understandable manner. Must be able to visually read and write findings and to verbally communicate with patients and patient's family.
Provides health care throughout the disease process: diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, palliative and terminal care.
Prevents, minimizes and manages symptoms/toxicities/health abnormalities related to disease or treatment in collaboration with physician and other allied personnel.
Provides psychological support to patients and families.

Research

Contributes to research efforts of department/section by: (1) identifying clinical problems amenable to research methods, and (2)collaborating in research projects.
Applies pertinent research to clinical practice.

Service

Schedules consultations, diagnostic tests or procedures, future appointments for patients in coordination with the attending physician. Must be able to walk from one area of the hospital to another to pick up and distribute information.
Monitors laboratory, clinical radiographic and procedural data for daily rounds. Must visually evaluate data and prepare written information.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse:

EDUCATION

Required:

Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003.

Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

EXPERIENCE

Preferred:

At least 1 year of Oncology experience in Advanced Practice Provider role.

Prior experience working with breast cancer patients.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required:

All of the following:

Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN or ACNP or ACNPC or ACAGNP or AGACNP or ACNPC-AG or AGACNP or AGNP or ACPNP or ANP or AGNP or AGPCNP or FNP or GNP or PNP or PMHNP or WHNP or APNP). Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) If working in the following departments: Pediatric - Patient Care (113100).

MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.

Physician Assistant:

EDUCATION

Required:

Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), except for Physician Assistants who graduated from a PA program prior to 2013.

EXPERIENCE

Preferred:

At least 1 year of Oncology experience in Advanced Practice Provider role.

Prior experience working with breast cancer patients.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required:

All of the following:

PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.

Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.

MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.

Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) , ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100).
