Director of Accounting
Job ID#: 36985
Director of Accounting
Position Overview
The Director of Accounting will serve as the top accounting leader responsible for building structure, improving cash flow visibility, and establishing scalable financial processes across a rapidly growing, project-based industrial services organization.
This role will oversee 7+ P&Ls/entities, lead consolidation and financial reporting, and take ownership of tightening invoicing, collections, and internal controls in an environment that is currently underdeveloped and highly manual.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on builder with deep experience in project-based accounting (construction, industrial services, oilfield services, or similar) who has successfully stepped into unstructured environments and created discipline, visibility, and accountability.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Leadership & Structure Build
- Stand up and formalize the accounting function across multiple entities and divisions
- Establish standardized processes, policies, and internal controls where little structure exists today
- Lead and develop a team of accountants, providing direction, accountability, and performance management
- Serve as the primary owner of accounting operations, reporting directly to the CFO/Executive team
Financial Reporting & Consolidation
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close across 7+ P&Ls/entities
- Lead consolidation of financials and ensure accuracy and timeliness of reporting
- Improve visibility into division-level performance and profitability
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and readiness for audit
AR, Billing & Cash Flow Optimization (CRITICAL FOCUS AREA)
- Take ownership of invoicing, billing, and collections processes, identifying breakdowns and implementing improvements
- Reduce aged receivables and drive cash flow improvements through process discipline and accountability
- Partner with operations and project teams to ensure accurate, timely billing (T&M and lump sum)
- Implement structure around WIP tracking, billing cycles, and revenue recognition (ASC 606 where applicable)
Internal Controls & Process Improvement
- Design and implement internal controls, approval workflows, and financial governance processes
- Identify inefficiencies and implement scalable solutions across accounting operations
- Drive process standardization across divisions, particularly in high-volume project environments
- Improve data integrity and reporting accuracy across systems
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Partner closely with operations, project managers, and divisional leaders to align financial and operational performance
- Support leadership with financial insights, variance analysis, and decision-making support
- Act as a key liaison between accounting and field operations
What Success Looks Like (First 6–12 Months)
- Stabilized and structured accounting function across all entities
- Measurable improvement in AR aging, billing timelines, and cash collections
- Clean, reliable monthly close and consolidated reporting process
- Implementation of internal controls and standardized procedures
- Increased visibility into project-level profitability and financial performance
Qualifications
Experience
- 8–12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles
- Proven experience in project-based or field service industries:
- Industrial services
- Construction / EPC
- Oil & gas / energy services
- Demonstrated success in building or transforming accounting functions in unstructured environments
- Strong experience with:
- Multi-entity accounting and consolidations
- Revenue recognition (ASC 606)
- Job costing / project accounting
- High-volume invoicing and collections environments
Technical Skills
- Strong GAAP knowledge
- Deep understanding of WIP, job costing, and project-based revenue models
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with ERP/accounting systems in multi-entity environments
- Ability to implement and improve processes without heavy system reliance
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
- CPA strongly preferred
Leadership Profile
- Hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves leader (not purely strategic)
- Comfortable operating in fast-paced, ambiguous, and evolving environments
- Strong accountability driver — able to push change across accounting and operations
- Effective communicator with both finance and non-finance stakeholders
Why This Role is Unique
- Opportunity to build structure from the ground up in a growing organization
