Wastewater Treatment Intern (Temporary)

Wastewater Plant Sugar Land

Summary of Position : The purpose of this position is to provide training and hands-on experience in water and wastewater treatment necessary to become a State licensed/certified operator or mechanic. The selected individual will work along side an advanced operator, who reads, interprets, and adjusts meters and gauges to make sure that plant equipment and processes are working properly, control chemical-feeding devices, take samples of the water, and perform chemical and biological laboratory analyses OR along side an advanced mechanic, who reads and interprets manuals and drawings to maintain plant equipment and machinery in condition according to the manufacturer's specifications, troubleshoot equipment, make minor repairs using hand tools and portable power tools. The individual selected will become familiar with a variety of instruments, equipment, and tools to monitor and control processes and perform general maintenance activities at the treatment plant.

Upon successful completion of the program, this internship will provide the individual with a solid foundation based on training and hands-on experience in the water or wastewater field. Interns will be encouraged to apply for available positions with the BRA.

Preferred/Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Basic knowledge of math, biology, chemistry, physics and/or mechanics are necessary to be successful in this position; ability to successfully complete assessments; and knowledge and use of computers and programs such as Word and Excel.

Preferred/Required Education and Acceptable Experience and Training : High school seniors or above with strong math, science or mechanical skills.

Work Schedule : This position will require 15 to 20 hours of work a week.

Certificates and Licenses Required : For those over the age of 18, a current Texas driver's license and a good driving record are required to travel, as needed, to other locations. The individual will be required to test for the Class D license at the end of the internship and successful high school graduation. All necessary training and examination fees will be paid for by the BRA.

Starting Salary : $15.00 per hour.
