Payroll Staff Accountant

Modern Family Law
Texas

Modern Family Law , a rapidly expanding national family law firm, is seeking an experienced and detailed  Payroll Staff Accountant  to join our growing Finance team. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing across a multi-state organization, while also supporting broader accounting and finance operations.

Modern Family Law offers competitive compensation, a wide range of benefits, and a culture built on family values.  This role is remote, but the Payroll Staff Accountant must reside in Colorado or Texas.

Key Responsibilities:

Payroll (primary function)

  • Process semi-monthly payroll accurately and on time across multiple states.
  • Ensure proper handling of salaries, bonuses, benefits, deductions, and payroll taxes.
  • Partner closely with People & Culture on new hires, terminations, compensation changes, and other payroll-impacting updates.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and documentation in accordance with internal controls and compliance requirements.
  • Respond to internal payroll-related inquiries from employees with professionalism and discretion.

Accounting & Finance Support

  • Support accounts payable activities, including invoice review, coding, and payment processing.
  • Assist with accounts receivable functions, including invoicing, payment application, and follow-up.
  • Participate in month-end close activities related to payroll, AP, and AR.
  • Prepare reconciliations and supporting schedules for financial reporting.
  • Assist with year-end compliance activities, including 1099 preparation and filing.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of payroll and accounting processes as the firm scales.

Finance Team & Business Support

  • Serve as backup support for other Finance functions as needed.
  • Participate in cross-training to strengthen team coverage and continuity.
  • Help improve processes, documentation, and internal controls.
  • Support special projects related to growth, systems, or compliance initiatives.
  • Other duties and projects may be assigned based on business needs.

Position Requirements:

  • As our culture is remote-first, all employees are expected to have the capability to work from home with a reliable internet connection and to set up a workstation that supports productive work during normal business hours.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in an accounting or finance role required.
  • Solid understanding of payroll taxes, wage and hour laws, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience in a multi-location or multi-state organization preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience with accounting, billing, and financial systems such as QuickBooks, TimeSolv, LawPay, and Salesforce preferred.
  • Experience with TriNet strongly preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong working knowledge of accounting fundamentals with the ability to analyze transactions, identify discrepancies, and manage multiple priorities with accuracy and organization.
  • Advanced attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to learn new technology quickly.
  • Proactive, solutions-oriented self-starter who understands detailed work within a broader organizational context.
  • Calm, focused, and effective under payroll cycles, strict deadlines, and compliance-driven timelines.
  • Clear and professional communicator who interacts effectively with all levels of personnel, including leadership, support staff, clients, and external partners.
  • Demonstrates discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive employee, client, and financial information.
  • Excellent client service skills with the ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously under minimal supervision.
  • Adaptable and flexible team player who responds positively to shifting demands.
  • Ability to work under pressure and, when necessary, support occasional off-site work based on business needs.

  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Short Term & Long Term Disability
  • Training & Development
  • Work From Anywhere -- eligible after 6 months

Mandatory Notices for Applicants:

ADA Compliance:  Candidates must be able to perform the role with or without reasonable accommodation. Requests for accommodation should be made to the Director of People & Culture in advance.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary Range: $70,000-$90,000. This range is a reasonably reliable estimate of the base salary that this individual is expected to receive. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience, location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

Comprehensive benefits package includes health insurance, HSA/FSA options, short-term and long-term disability, dental and vision care, life insurance, 401(k), vacation, sick time, and access to an employee assistance program. Additional voluntary benefits include accident insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, long-term care insurance, and pet insurance. Commuter and transit benefits may be available in some locations.

Modern Family Law will consider all qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records. Modern Family Law is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and has zero tolerance for harassment of any kind. Individuals seeking employment at MFL are considered without regard to their race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, transgender experience, national origin, age, marital status, ancestry, disability, military status (including discharge status), genetic information, or any other protected class status as set forth by local, state, and federal law.
